    Quench plates?

I've had the same question. I've left a bit of a flat on my full grind knives, not taking the grind all the way up. I figured it would give more surface area to speed cooling and help keep the blade straight. Made me wonder how other people tackle this and if anyone has noticed a difference.

    What is this - scale?

This is a peice of O-1. I ground it out to 180 grit, cleaned it with alcohol, then put it in the oven for a stress relief. The oven was preheated for maybe 10 minutes and cycling around 1200. I've read that at 1200 degrees there should be no decarburization, and little scale. I normally...

    Cerakote

I've used a little cerakote and a bit of gunkote and alumahyde. I coated my first blade. Yeah, you don't have to but I wanted to and it was fun. Do you have any specific questions? I use a $16 hvlp touch up gun from harbor freight, an inline desiccant moisture absorber, running 40psi from...

Reasonable way to engrave a blade?

Is there a reasonable way, price and work wise, to engrave a logo or text on a blade? I have an electro etch machine and stencils from Ernie Gospitch, but its not really the look i'm going for. I would like to have a black coated blade and have the etching stand out as bare metal, a lot...

Trying to make my first knife.

You could check out single brick forges too. Probably not as good as a coffee can forge but a one brick forge has got to be the easiest to make. Good luck! My first couple were in o1 heated in a fire, going with a forge and 1084 will probably produce a better result.

    Normalizing

Thank you for taking the time to write these heat treating posts and for letting us tap into your knowledge and experience. You mentioned that annealed stock can benefit from normalizing. What about CPM or particle steels?

    DuraBake ?

I haven't used durabake, but have used a bit of gunkote. Gunkote is the same idea, spray on and bake. Using a small airbrush I've done about 4-5 knives and have more than half of a 4 oz can left.
