This is a peice of O-1. I ground it out to 180 grit, cleaned it with alcohol, then put it in the oven for a stress relief. The oven was preheated for maybe 10 minutes and cycling around 1200.
I've read that at 1200 degrees there should be no decarburization, and little scale. I normally protect the blade with atp641 for stress relief cycles, this time I didn't. I was trying to keep from having problems of coating and re-coating where I would get apparent holes in the coating.
So what am I seeing here? It looks bad like an outer layer of steel or something on the surface is peeling away. I haven't been able to find similar pictures of this in searches.
