Starting work on a "Camp knife"

I really like a flat grind for a larger knife like this. not sure about smaller thinner blades though. Three quarters seems to look better on a smaller knife. The tapered tang was not too hard, and I really like the way that it looks. Again, probably not so much on a smaller knife.

    Blade geometry and edge toughness

Thanks Ed, This felt counter to what I thought I knew. I had always thought that the last bevel needed to be "razor flat" rather then an convex bevel with as smooth a transition as possible. Now that I am thinking about it I can picture the drag that is created to get past a flat "primary?"...

Starting work on a "Camp knife"

Here is that camp knife completed with a "satin" finish and a tapered tang. I may need to smooth it out a bit more though.

Starting work on a "Camp knife"

I really liked this design for a camp knife, so I am making it with .25" thick CPM 154. I am thinking flat or even saber grind going 3/4 of the way up to the spine. perhaps a false edge on the drop point. I also want to try and taper the tang. I am looking for feedback before I commit to the...

    First Attempt at hollow grind.

Thanks! For my next trick, I will attempt to make a "Camp Knife". I have been messing with a couple of ideas in my head and came up with a simple design that will be about 11.5" overall length made with some .25"X2" CPM 154 stock. Longer blades are much harder to do even grinds on, so we will...

    First Attempt at hollow grind.

This one is completed. AEB-L treated with dry ice cryo .110" thick at spine green and black linen Micarta for the scales This knife slices very well, I even used it to cut the leather for the sheath. The sheath was experimental and it seems to work in spite of it.

    Recurve Fighter w/Hamon

Very nice! I see work like this and all I can do is tell myself: Someday.

    First Attempt at hollow grind.

Oh, I have a drawer in my toolbox with failed attempts. I keep them to remind me that I need to take my time, that is where most of my scrap comes from. not taking my time. that and not having a clue yet.

    First Attempt at hollow grind.

with a serious grinder? Just got it this weekend. otherwise I was using a 4" belt sander for what, a couple of months at the most with no speed control, which was seriously awful in comparison. That sander was like building a house with only a hammer.

    First Attempt at hollow grind.

That is some great advice. I am using a 10" wheel and after following your advice, I was able get out the ripples at a slow speed with finer belts. So much to learn! I am like i kid in a candy store with $10 to spend. Here is a pic of the knife in it's current form. Still need lots of work...

    First Attempt at hollow grind.

So this weekend my grinder came in and I very quickly scrapped a couple pieces of steel and some belts trying to get a feel for this thing. Don't get me wrong, I love the grinder, I just don't know how to really use it yet, but I will. By the end of the weekend, this is what I came up with...

    My first knife

I was definitely impressed with Murray Carter's designs, which is why I made this. As a side note I am starting to see the draw for satin finishes. I am thinking that a satin finish is more forgiving then a polished one. When my grinder comes in I will be ordering some of those non-woven...

    My first knife

Thanks! The plunges are pretty close, but the far side has a slight S shape to the line and the angle is just a little different. plus I went a little too deep. just enough to feel a slight wave along the spine on one side. As for the heat treat, I followed the fairly standard bring it up...

    My first knife

OK here is my second knife. I saw the design in Murray Carter's book (101 Knife Designs: Practical Knives for Daily Use), Carter seems have an appreciation for Kitchen cutlery and neck knifes. I had never really considered a neck knife as a particularly low key EDC, but his designs got me...
