Who knows what this is?(WIP Live)

Chris: You did GOOD! Can't wait to see the etched results. I need to draw my billet out a tad thinner also - but it seems when I draw with a hammer the outer layers get thinner, but the center layer stays almost as thick as original.
Good luck and have fun!

What is your core made from? Maybe the HC moves harder under the hammer...

The core on the last billet is .138" thick 1095, and the mild steel (scrap on hand) sides are only .090" at start. I "think" it might be best to have the core slightly thinner than the sides. I think my next billet will be using 15N20 for the core, either .064" or .094" thick.

My core was thinner and I was afraid after drawing the billet out my HC may be too thin. I should finish it tomorrow and find out.

I saw the fresh ground metal you used for the sandwich, but it's hard to tell how thick the metal is. Looks like the core is thinner than the outside.

Chris, I just noticed your fresh billet in forge - did you tack weld it? OR, did you weld all the way around? If tack welded, did you use an flux? I sealed welded all the way around to seal inside to keep forge scale from forming between layers.

I tacked it then heated to orange and fluxed. Back to orange and set welds then back to orange etc. I may have fluxed again but it was not after every heat.
