Tips For Custom G10 Scales?

Hello everybody, I'm interested in making some G10 scales for some of my folders, I was wondering if anyone could provide me with some tips to do so. Such as, tools, drill bit sizes, etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I just ordered a pair of tan 1/8" G10 scales and hope to start working on them sometime later this week.

Thanks

A couple quick tips.
use fresh, sharp belts to grind g10. Dull belts and high speed burn g10. Cheap AO belts often work better than expensive ceramic belts. Zirc belts might be the best for g10.

g10 tends to expand a bit when drilling and shrink back down when the drill but is pulled out. You will often have to drill a slightly over sized hole to get the true hole size you want. In addition to typical fraction drill bits, you will want a few wire size drill bits the next size larger than your planned hole size.

g10 can be buffed to a high shine but you will have to experiment with what compounds work best. They all seem to buff a little differently.

Good luck...

About the only thing I would recommend is a good respirator for sure, G-10 is a fiber glass laminate and as you grind it those fine particles will find your lungs and never leave. as far as shaping and grinding I think it's comparable to a soft wood. I find it strange that it's lighter than micarta and easier to work but seems every bit as durable as micarta. I love the stuff and use it pretty often. like boss dog says, it has zero give in drilled holes like wood, and dull tools will burn it. I just finished a hatchet with G-10 and posted pictures in the hatchet-ax section.

Don't forget to try it for liners too! I use .060 & 1/16" thick G10 for that. It's water proof and the colors are very nice. USAKnifemaker.com has a great stock of colors and thickness. I use GFlex epoxy from there to attach G10 with. Marine grade and a reasonable work time with it.
