Tang Scale

I recently heat treated some A-2 and thought about leaving the oxide layer that forms on the tang of the blade where the lock engages. This area is hard and might make the tang more wear resistant and keep the lock from having "bite".
Would this idea be the same as heating the end of the lock and forming a layer of titanium oxide on the lock face to prevent wear and "bite"?

What about using both ideas?
Thanks,
Chuck
