If I wanted to do a stone washes blade what would I use for media? I have a decent size Dry tumbler and a rotary tumbler that I use SS pins with water and a little dish detergent in to clean brass shells for reloading. What tumbler would be best and approx how long? I use mainly 01 and 1084 right now. Thanks!!
 
I use a large vibratory tumbler with the triangle shaped ceramic media. I also put 1-2 cups of Simple Green in the tumbler, depending on how I want the finished product to look. Less liquid gives more of an "even" matte finish, and more liquid gives a more "splotchy" (or a larger patterned) finish. I've used both the Harbor Freight vibratory, as well as the high end ones...... the main difference is the amount of time it takes for a given level of finish. The Harbor Freight is a "leave it all day" thing, and the high end tumblers get the job done in less than a couple of hours.
 
I use the big one from harbor freight with the triangle shaped ceramic media as well. One thing I learned quickly about that tumbler is that you need to run it with the top off or it will take all day as Ed says.
 
Nope! :) Although I've heard/read all kinds of claims that this or that will make a given carbon/alloy steel rust resistance, it just isn't so. It's just "the nature of the beast". The closest thing I've ever seen are some of the baked on coatings....at least until they get scratched off. :)
