Silver Wire Inlay on Thin handle material?

So I have a set of scales of curly maple that are .150 thick and I would like to have them inlay-ed with some silver wire. The friend that I sent them to thinks that they are too thin and that he will split them when cutting the grove with his chisel.

So any suggestions on inlaying thin scales?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Chuck

Over in the engraving forums I seem to recall a flute maker say he cut his grooves with a high-speed (40,000 - 50,000 rpm) rotary tool with a blank burr - just a straight shaft. He said the high speed made it burn it's way through the wood leaving a very clean, smooth channel.

I know with any sort of burr those things just erase wood (and metal). No torque at all but that tremendous speed...

Your friend might want to give it a test on a scrap.
