Surface grinder!!!! I pulled the trigger today, it just kept calling to me....buy me.....buy me..... Found this one locally a few weeks ago and looked it over pretty good, but the guy was just asking too much, i.e. I'm a cheapskate. He had it listed for $1250 and after lowballing him, walking away, sleeping on it, re-lowballing him, etc. I ended up taking it home this morning for $850. Not sure if that's a great deal, good deal, or too much, but I think its not too bad.

It was previously wired for 480v 3 phase and it's got a hydraulic pump/reservoir that hooks up to it too. It can be used manually or automatically. It's pretty filthy, so I 'm going to clean it up and start converting it over to 240v single phase operation. This bugger was freakin heavy!

After you use the surface grinder for a few knives, you'll wonder how you ever did without it. It and my 2 x72 are the two most valuable tools I use now for folder making.

Happy grinding.

Anthony, I think you got great buy for that price. If you decide you don't like it, you won't have any trouble selling it. Be sure to let us know how it works after you get it cleaned up and rewired.
Congrats.

Hey Chris, I've got a VFD for the 1hp spindle. I don't like the way grinders free wheel so long when you turn them off anyway, so the VFD will help that, and get push button variable speed verses pulleys/belts. I can't decide for sure how I'll do the separate hydraulic pump motor. I could possibly hook them both to the same vfd (it's a little oversized anyway) but I'm not sure that I want the hydraulics on every time I use it. It's 3/4 hp, so it might be just as easy to put a single phase motor on the pump. Maybe some of you guys that have a SG can advise me on that, but I don't see myself using the auto table travel for little backspacer or slipjoint spring.

I suppose you could just tie in a 3 phase disconnect just before the hydraulic motor, no?

That said, My SG has a seperate power feed motor that runs a belt drive system, and I just let it run regardless, although 95% I'll use the power feeds anyway.
