KNIFE MAKER
I am going to buy a new respirator. I wear glasses, sometimes need to wear a magnifing visor, and I work with metal, wood, stone, and bone primarily.

I would like one that provides both particle and vapor prtection. The cartridges need to be found in the mainstream market. The one I hav been using is a discountinued model that has seen better days.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,

George

Every home improvement or full line hardware store carries the canister style and they will say vapor or particle or both. If they meet OSHA requirements (it will say that very clearly on the package) you are good to go. There are several dozen styles on the market because its good money and every face is different so the masks fit differently. Get the lightest one you can find or your neck will pay the price.

I concur with the Bossdog,
I use a half mask with P100 filters and another on top?
I wear glasses and everyone should have eye protection doing our kind of work.

I have a Air American full helmet with positive force and my problem with it and other full face masks is the refaction I get in the face shield and with the corrective eyewear gives me a headache in about one hours time or less.

So I prefer the Half mask and have a face shield I just put on for buffing etc so I do get the compound thrown into my eyes.

Bearing in mind what has been said, I am looking at a 3 M and a North 7700 brand mask. I will go check them out this weekend to see which one is the lighter weight unit. I have a full shield for eye protection. I also have a full beard.
Thank you,

George

Beards can be tough depending on how thick & how thick your hair.
I trimmed my beard back and then eventually just shaved it off. I do have a very thick & bushy beard.

You will know in awhile of using the mask.

You may run into problems with the full beard. My beard is somewhat full with just the chin shaved but I can still get a good seal. It also just grows along the jaw line, my cheeks are shaved because the beard is thin there. To test, place the respirator on and tighten it up then place you hand over the intakes on the filters and suck in hard. If the sides of the respirator suck in then you have a good seal. If not, you will feel the leaking around it's edges. You might have to play with it a bit and wear it a bit tighter than you normally would to get it to work with the beard. If that doesn't work then you will need to look at reworking the beard or shaving it off. You could also try different models of respirators, but that could be expensive.

I've been thinking about getting one of these for a while. I don't believe they are available on the "mainstream" market, but you can order a handful of spare cartridges and be good to go for some time.

In the mean time, I use a standard "stanley" brand cartridge respirator that I got from Menards. I also have a fairly heavy beard (1.5" to 2" long as well) and it seals fairly well. Not the easiest to use with glasses though.
