need advice/suggestions on HHH damascus billet

Hello every one I am the lucky winner of HHH Damascus billet. Let me tell you it is in the top 5 of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. I think the billet demands a beautiful handle. This is where all of you come into play. I need your advice/ suggestions on what I should use. I have 3 ideas so far. #1 use the beautiful diamond willow burl I just bought from Craig. #2 Use the amazing Iron wood that I purchased from burl source. #3 get elephant ivory scales and have someone scrimshaw a portrait of my Brothers new born baby boy on the scale and give it to him for xmas. What one should I go with? Do you have any other suggestions? What should I use for bolster material?

When something is really beautiful, it pleases my eye to see it framed and accented by something simple and understated - to show off how outstanding it is.

In the alternative, I like to see something that continues the pattern - for example curly Koa with a ladder pattern blade.

Congrats!

I agree with Knifemakerca on the first one. Personally when I make a Damascus knife with a beautiful pattern like you describe,
I go for some thing more on the sober side so you can enjoy the Great damascus.

Ladder pattern Damascus with anodized Titanium liners & fossilized coral scales, Tiger eye thumb stud Bla! Bla!
You get the idea! So busy you really can't enjoy the Damascus knife, Knife? Is that what we are looking at?

I Don't and won't use elephant ivory for ethical reasons, perhaps a ivory micarta? I've had some nice pieces of the old Westinghouse stuff that did a credit to the Damascus with out over kill! Or a white Camel bone?

A nice mid range piece of Ironwood can be Enjoyable and complimentary to a nice figured Damascus blade. Maybe a piece of Holly-Wood? A nice white wood that will give a contrast to the Grays and blacks in Damascus. .

Hope this helps!

Heres a snap shot of the damascus.. this should make it a little easier for the pound to advise on handle choices.. :)

First thing that comes to mind would be a curly wood. and in a light color.. :) Or a nice ivory with a scrim always makes a beautiful and amazing look!

I think what Randy really means is to get some Curly Ironwood!!! ;) Just remember, no matter what the question is, the answer is always gonna be IRONWOOD!!!

Srsly though, it's funny you mentioned the tiger striped maple because I'm gonna be making my neighbor across the street a damascus knife. I got some of Alabama's damascus in and was holding up some blocks to it and just about decided that the tiger stripe block I have will be what I use. If I don't talk myself into Ironwood! LOL

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but since Tiger Stripe Maple was brought up, how do you get that dark look on these scales? Everything I have is light/blondish yellow in color and I'm too chicken to experiment with it to get darker colors. Also, should the scales be stabilized or is this one of the woods that doesn't really need it?

I will help ypu you send me that billet and I will send you some W2. That way you wont have to make the hard decisions. LOL It is a very nice billet.

Ironwood is NICE!! :)
