My first try with Antelope horn

I got this one most of the way finished up last night, its finally cooled down enough in OK for me to get back to work!!!

This is my first try with antelope horn, i really like the stuff. Its very translucent with some nice colors deep inside it. Its unfortunate that there is very little useable since the horns are so small and hollow but i cant wait to try it again and see if i can cut it to make it go a little farther.

This is 1095 differentially heat treated steel, dark etched and oil soaked to bring out the hamon. Brass bolsters then antelope horn and finished with some beautiful buckeye burl and mosaic pins

Thank ya. I really like working with the stuff, I just wish it easier to find and a little more thick so it was easier to work with.

ya i wish i could get a larger piece to work with but there horns are so thin and hollow so far it doesnt leave much to work with. From the base to 3/4 of the way up the horn the material is only like a little more than 1/4" thick and that includes the rough outer layer than i had to grind away to get to this pretty dense material in the middle.

I was worried about the stuff shrinking as well. this horn is a couple of years old and I have instructed the owner to give the handle a light coat of oil whenever he thinks about it. other than that i guess i can just hope for the best.

I like the looks of the antelope horn. I going antelope hunting this year in Montana. I,ll look for some seasoned horn while I,m there.
