Makers Mark help on dark blade.

Any tips on how to remove say 1/2 round area of the scale on a blade that I left black after heat treat. ? This will allow a maker’s mark to show up when etched. Im looking for some tool to do it. I tried hand sanding but can’t get a little area. I also tried super gluing a piece of sandpaper to the end of a pencil and using a drill. . That didn’t work.

I've soaked knives in vinegar to remove the scale after heat treat. Maybe you could mask it off and use vinegar?
