Looking for liner material

I am in the process of making a (primitive) friction folder. The blade will be 1080. The handle is going to be jigged camel bone, so I will need to put a liner sandwich between the bone and the spine of the folder to support the camel bone.

The blade will be blued and etched when finished. So I am looking for some sheet metal to use as liners that will blue and etch like the 1080!

I can buy something from a local hardware but my concern is it going to come out the same color as the 1080!

So has anyone got any idea as too what and where I can buy some sheet metal, stiff enough to use as a liner and, that will blue/etch to match the 1080 I am using for the blade????

Suggestions anyone??

You can blacken brass, bronze, copper and nickel silver. It won't match the 1080 exactly but it would be 'old timey'.

Maybe also look for some thin 15n20. That would pretty much take the same finish as your 1080 and it's typically available in thinner sizes.

I Goggled 51N20 and this is what popped up.

So I have an inquiry in to NJ Steel Baron about the 51N20. I have always heard good things about him. If the info I get back tells me what I am hoping it will then I may finally make a purchase from him!! Thanks John!

Can't say enough good about Aldo. He strives for the best product and almost always gets it. Reasonable prices and the most honest man you'll ever meet. If what you got was not what you expected, it was beyond his control.

No, he is not my mother.

... but he is my favorite steel supplier.......

C Craft if he doesn't have it try Ray Kirk. Ray has two different thicknesses that he cuts from new bandsaw material.

I guess I'm simple minded, but why not use 1080 if you want it to match? You'd have to machine and surface grind it down to liner thickness but that would be simple enough. I'd have to think about it but you might want to harden and then spring templet the liners but I realy don't think it would be necessarie.

If you emailed Aldo, just call him. At times they get busy and don't return email very fast. They are very good at answering the phone and any questions you may have. They will even search the place to see if they might have a piece or two of what you need laying around even when they're out of it.

Thanks for the info George!

Eric I don't have a problem with using 1080 I just don't have any thin enough. I am thinking I want something about 1/16" thickness or less for the liners. The only sheet metal I can buy locally, in small quantities, is not going to work due to the make of the material. So since I will have to order something anyway...............well.

The 51N20 was suggested for strength and because of the thicknesses that it comes in, since it is often use a bandsaw blade material, it seems that it might be a logical choice!
