leather question

I am confused as to what this is and what its used for, and what size leather would you recommend?

It's a button stud or Sam Brown stud. Used to hold a strap closed.

Haven't I seen those used without a frog, to go into a hold on your belt? (belt OVER the sheath, stud poking through)

as far as the leather is concerned (I'm guessing ur talking about the sheath)..use 8-9 oz.
