A Mississippi bill to remove the ban on carrying a “bowie knife, dirk knife, butcher knife, (and) switchblade knife” concealed, House Bill 451, has been introduced by Representative Henry Zuber.

We will let you know when it is time to contact the legislature on this bill.

What about the part of the law that classifies a Bowie knife in the same manner as a firearm?
 
Not sure what you are referring to. The only other place I find Bowie knives mentioned is § 97-37-5 which deals with felons and weapon possession. That would not change

That’s it. Why would it not change? This is clearly some Jim Crow version of an old 1800’s law that treats a type of knife like a firearm. I suspect that they just rolled it into whatever laws they came up with to keep certain minorities from possessing firearms.
 
Indeed! If you are looking for rationality in legislation, you are going to be disappointed. We move the needle in the right direction as we can. Incremental improvement is better than none at all and this change will be a big improvement for the vast majority of Mississippians. If we get it done it's not over and we'll be back.
