I have heard over the years about the "Triple Quench"
Where a blade is taken to non-magnetic temp and then quenched in whatever liquid is being use at the time.

Years ago as a newbie I spoke with Mr. Bob Loveless about this and he said in his usual critical voice,.
"Each heat will cancel out the previous quench so it doesn't do a darn thing!"

While Mr. Loveless was not a metallurgist he certainly knew all lot about steel and knife making.

I have always wondered if there is any real science behind this process since I still see it used and talked about quite a lot?

Since you are the most knowledgable person I know when it comes to these questions regarding Heat Treatment of carbon Steels I am bringing this question to you and any others that have repeatable proof of any benefit of doing a Triple Quench.

Laurence, this topic is so rife with controversy that I have found few public venues where it does anything but sow discontent. There are true believers, to whom all the facts in the world will not matter, and there are absolute doubters on whom all the claims will be wasted. The truth is somewhere in between. I have information on the topic but this forum has had its share of “traffic” this week so just send me an e-mail and I will be happy to discuss the entire topic in-depth with you without inciting any holy wars.

OK,
I noticed after I posted here and another thread that something was going on? This topic has always interested me in an academic sense. I don't want to cause any trouble around here so lets just closed this thread.

"Triple Quench": lower potential maximum hardness, but a higher degree of toughness at the same hardnesses of a single quench... At least that's what the "experts" say. :)

God bless you Laurence, that is music to my ears! I also have a personal rule about avoiding threads addressed specifically to me. But really, please do e-mail me if I can answer any of your questions I do have information for you.
