Hey what's up guys (and gals) I'm Mike! from Lubbock, Texas, 27 years old
I'm here because I'm trying to learn as much as I can about knife making before I dive in head first. Long story short I got tired of the edge retention on my butcher knives and decided to see if I could make something that will maintain a razor sharp edge for longer than a day or so before I had to go home and sharpen again. I just recently purchased a wicked edge sharpening system (love it, highly recommended) , so now my standards for what is sharp in a blade have dramatically increased.
I've got a couple knife designs in mind I want to try out to make a custom butcher knife, plus with the holidays coming around I thought it would make a great time to make some knives as gifts for my friends and family. Hopefully if my knives look good enough (which im sure they will) I can get some free advertising from my friends and family showing off my work!
I ordered my first piece of steel from new jersey steel barron earlier today - 48''x1.5''x0.125''. I'm planning on making a batch of knives with this that will have 3'' handles and 3'' blades - something small so that if I screw up, it's not a huge hunk of trash steel right?
Bills have to be payed first so it's going to be a slow process, but I'm itching to get started!
