Hi Everyone,
I am from South Africa and I live in the Great Karoo region of the Eastern Cape on a small farm. I have been a member here for a good while, but not very active, mainly due to time constraints - there are so many forums out there it gets a little confusing sometimes, so I have slowly been extending my exposure to them after some looking around to find the ones where I think I'd fit in and might be able to contribute best. So here I am
My real name is Willem - K'roo is the brand name I use on my knives. K'roo being the way the locals pronounce Karoo.
A little back ground: I started making knives about 8 and a 1/2 years ago as a hobby, and got into it full time about 3 and 1/2 years ago. I have been active in the UK, Europe and locally mainly to date, and am still very much active there - in the beginning not so much by design as due to circumstances just sort of developing that way during the hobby phase and it was the logical route to continue on when I turned to knife making full time. But I am glad to say I do have quite a number of customers in the US of A and Canada too. In fact, it is mainly due to them, and the fact that I have over time been getting more and more inquiries from the US that I decided it is time to venture into the US and Canadian market a little more pro-actively - and so started looking at increasing my participation on selected forums.
Well, that's me in brief. I have been dealing with Tracey/USA Knifemaker on and off for a few years now on materials and I've always liked the "atmosphere" and approach of Knifedogs and I shall endeavor to become a valuable member and hope to make some sensible contributions
Some pictures of the area that I live in:
This is the view from my workshop:
Late afternoon:
View from the hill behind my house - lots of flat open space too, along with the hills and mountains. In the second pic is my son - we were out hunting early morning:
Like most deserts and semi-deserts we get lots of beautiful flowers. This first few is one we call the rain flower - if this one blooms you can bet you bottom dollar it is going to rain within 48 hours:
After good rains the whole veldt becomes covered in flowers, literally within a couple of days:
A couple of pics taken on the way to town on different days. In the first one the mountain visible in the distance is "Vulture Mountain" and in the pic it is about 23 miles away. The other is just part of a homestead that I thought would make a nice pic
