Grinder modifications

I just came back from Ed Caffrey's basic bladesmithing 2 course (More to follow) and found out how bad my kalamazoo grinder is. I'm going to build a new platen and small wheel attachment for it but I need to slow the belt down. Has anyone put a variable speed drive unit on a electric motor? Welding, cutting, etc I can handle electricity is ober my head.

As a side note if you are thinking about one of Ed's courses. DO IT!! I had a great time and learned a lot of stuff. Ed is a great guy and a great teacher.

Brad alot of us use VFDs to control speed but to my (limited) understanding, they only work with 3ph motors. Best of luck.
