Well ruff ground and heat treated 4 razors using my new razor set up.I'm just practicing and getting my technique down.I will probably give them away as patch knives as they are just practice.

Those are looking good. I just profiled my first razor last weekend and hope to get back to it tomorrow. I hope mine turns out as nice as yours.

They are interesting and have a lot of history behind them,I've always been fascinated by them and decided to start making them. There are a few videos on YouTube but not a lot of info on making them other than what you find on YouTube.I just decided to do it,took a guess on wheels size after compairing profiles on my favorite razors.I like the looks of the Big smiling blades but found the 5/8 and 6/8 round nose blades were the easiest to shave with. The swept back points and square points always seem to Nick me around the ear no matter how careful I shave. My practice blades are 1/8 inch at the spine but I'm going to actually be using 3/16 .I found that for myself that once you get up to 1/4 inch and beyond its like trying to shave with a hatchet.

after having done some, do you think a jig is necessary? Could you hollow grind by holding the blade against the wheel, or use a tool rest?

I don't use a jig it's more of a adjustable tool rest,I don't think I could hold on to one when you make your first ruff grind, after I heat treated the blades and went to a finer grit I free handed them without a problem.

I didn't have a issue with splice bump,I think the softness of the wheel compared to a hard platin helps and also by the time I hit 220 i was using a very soft touch.
