Cane knife

I had a gentleman contact me about making him a knife like this. It seems pretty straightforward, but I’m curious what you’d suggest as far as metal selection? It’s use for chopping cane and various other brush.
Any suggestions?

You could ask if he'd like the metal to get a patina on it like the one you've shown or if he'd like it to stay "shiny". That would get you started with a decision between stainless and a high carbon steel.

Or depending on his budget maybe he'd like Damascus? More of a show piece but not sure what he's looking for.

I would go with a simple steel like 1075, 1080, or 1084 if he wants a working blade. Like Chris said, if he wants it to be a wall hanger you could use a stainless steel or damascus if he wants something showy.

Not all that different from a tobacco knife or a multitude of tools from Asia, I suspect. I suspect. A lot of times, such things are made from leftovers" like sawmill blades and such. Pretty basic.

Just some "useless information".
Cane knives produced for cutting sugar cane is a mass produced, rudimentary tool made cheaply.
The specimen in your picture is referred to as a short cane knife where I come from. There is a longer version with both the blade and handle being longer. They also come with curved blades to better cut the cane for maximum yield. The bottom 15cm of cane has a lot more sugar in it than the higher portions.
The steel is very thin, abour 2.5 mm, and is a carbon steel. I am trying to check with one of our local manufacturers to try and see which steel exactly.

If you can forge it out (power hammer, forging press, or a hell of a lot of hammering) a leaf spring would be good stock for it. Unless you're looking at new steel - in that case, I'm not read up on it enough to give a GOOD opinion.

If you go the leaf spring route, I recommend finding a local scrap yard and pulling them off a car or truck. If you need bigger stock, find a big truck, like a dump truck or a semi. Those springs are usually a LOT bigger. Severe duty trucks like trash trucks usually have MASSIVE spring packs, as well.
