Camp/Bushcraft WIP

The quality traits of a knife maker - perseverance. Looking forward to seeing the finished knife.
Thanks... I’m looking forward to it as well.. lol. Spent several hours with the file and sandpaper today. My 4x36 is starting to fade .... might have to buy a replacement of some sort soon

Got my 1x30 setup and did some finish work in the grind. Something went awry drilling my center pin hole and the bit hogged out the hole a little. Decided the center pin will be a bit larger now ... lol

Edit: looking closer at this picture, it's clear that my drill press isn't running true or I didn't get the drills inserted correctly. I guess I'll peen the brass a little to cover the gaps.....thoughts?

If you drill ream the holes it will come out better for size. Say if you are finishing at 1/4". First drill should be just under .250. With letter & number drills that is a lot to pick from. If you only have fractional drills then 15/64 will be the one. A little more work but well worth it! Good luck.

Any excuse for more/new tools ;) Thanks for the tip.

Are the holes wallered out the whole way thru or just towards the outer surface? you might sand down half the thickness of those scale and find out the holes are tighter towards the finished handle size.

That’s a good point ... I think it may be better down towards the tang. I’ll inspect it tomorrow

For 1/4" holes, I'll use a letter F bit @ .257". That wood has some interesting grain and color. Is it cumaru?

I NEVER peen pins on natural handle materials. Why? Because one tiny tap too many, and you will split the handle material.... and it this case it's more likely than not, because of the way the grain intersects the top radius of the pin holes...... a train wreck just waiting to happen! :)

Here's a chart that I built/have taped to the drill presses in my shop......

Ya know,,,, Do you use any kind of start drill. I like spade drills myself. Any kind of start drill would be better than nothing. It will help keep the drill from walking off. Keep the hole round. Good luck.

Edit: something like this. It's just the first one I found. Maybe not the best price!!
