Buyer Beware Lesson

Well, I fell for it. I'm embarrassed to say that I clicked on an ad on a Microsoft bing website ad that presented a well-known knife company (Benchmade) knives for sale which were about 100 bucks less expensive than an authorized dealer. After I completed the online purchase, I slept on it and realized that you know what.... if it's too good to be true then it probably is. So I emailed the company and didn't get a response after 4 attempts to cancel the order. They finally sent me a one-sentence email in return that said basically to be patient and my order would be sent soon. That, of course, isn't what I requested; I wanted to cancel the order. I then sent one or two emails back to these people with no results. I received the knife 4 weeks later. So, I'm very suspicious about it now and inspect the knife (9400 Osbourne Auto). At first, it looked pretty nice! I then took out my Osbourne 940 and then compared the workmanship. I also compared the new knife to online videos and pictures. Well, there were many small details that were significantly different but it wasn't evident to me at first. Here are the things that were different on the 9400 Auto:

1. The blade shape and size, 2. the etching of the BM logo, 3. the Axix lock switch hardware shape, 4. one of the screw holes in the handle were different on one side, 5. the green color was different, 6. the box that it came in was black, not blue, 7. the documentation was different, 8. the Axis sticker was on flimsy stock paper, 9. the function of the automatic button that releases the blade was a little sticky, 10. The box insert (styrofoam) was different, 11. the words on the box inventory sticker were not the same as one on a real product, 12. the handle spacer's color (purple) was not a rich color like a real one.

I hope this is helpful to people who read this. My counterfeit knife now sits in the box and may never see the light of day. I tried to find the website again but they changed the name! It was knifeshouse.com and now it's benchmadesale.com. These will lead you to funcywish.com.

The knife was sent from Compton, Calif. where there are no authorized dealers. The emails contained Chinese characters and the mail wrappings looked like it came from Asia somewhere via DHL.

Bottom-line: Only buy knives from AUTHORIZED DEALERS. Lesson learned for me.

I did get a notice of a refund from PayPal who has a policy for these things. I don't have my refund yet as it takes several weeks.

Counterfeiting is rampant in this industry as well as in others. Buyer beware.
