Chef, "boning" is pretty much the same thing as wet molding. The original boning tools as I understand were made from Whale rib bones, slightly curved and domed and sort of shuttle shaped. I happen to have one made from the front leg bone of a White Tail Deer. With the object within the sheath or holster or whatever, you rub the bone over the leather item to produce a wet molded image of the knife, pistol, etc and produce a very exact fit.
It can also be done to compress the grain side of leather and make it very slick and smooth, and firm. This is sometimes also referred to as 'glassing" as it can also be done with a rectangular piece of heavy flat (1/4'+ thick) glass that has had at least one edge rounded and sanded smooth. I think this would be the application for the razor strops.
