I am getting ready to order some stuff from USA Knife Maker Supply and was wondering What tooth count is best with a portable band saw blade for cutting knife steel?
I use an 18 tpi blade. It's not as aggressive and takes a bit longer but I'm finding that the blade is lasting longer (haven't broken a tooth on it yet).
the rule of thumb is you want 3 teeth contacting the surface at one time. In practice, if you are cutting thicker than 3/16", get a14/18tpi vari tooth, if you are cutting 1/8" to 3/16" get 18tpi.
I personally like to use 24 tpi blades that I get locally. They don't like my 1084 HR from admiral, but they cute quite a bit before losing a few teeth. I don't know how they compare directly to 18 tpi, but the 24 are probably a little slower going.
