Sure! That forge will do fine for starting out.

    drill bits for tang holes

https://www.mcmaster.com/drill-bits/for-use-on~hardened-steel/carbide-drill-bits-for-hardened-steel/ Above is a link to bits on MMC, not posting an ad for them…. :) I have a few of these in my most used sizes and they are bad-ass. They will drill through pretty hard stock. That being said...

    D2 Air quench temp?

Okay, darn. Thanks for making it more clear. Sometimes I get an idea in my head, and I like to experiment, but I’m not too much an “hold my beer and watch this” kind of guy. Thanks for the info!

    D2 Air quench temp?

Thanks Kevin. Very helpful information. so what I’m hearing is I can still do a differential quench with D2. In other words, the ground thinner sections (roughed out edge shape) will quench harder because of quicker heat dissipation than the thicker sections. I just have to experiment to get it...

    D2 Air quench temp?

Thanks for the replies guys. Still trying to understand this. So “air quenching” will cool quickly enough to lock the carbon and you won’t benefit from quenching cooler to be harder, or longer to be more soft? So, it just is what it is?

    D2 Air quench temp?

Is there a preferred temperature for the air to be at with an air quench on D2? I guess what I’m asking is am I better to air quench over my forge for a few hours in the shop….. or hang it outside in the winter at -20 deg? And why?

Fitzo, yes, an intensifier is perfect for providing pressure and no recirculating flow. You can get up to some really high pressures with them. Effectively a large piston driving a small piston. So multiply the large piston square inches and apply that to the small piston. It will reduce the...

So with what I’m reading about Cactus Juice it appears that it’s Methacrylate Esters or MMA. Even the front of the bottle says that. That MSDS says it’s not soluble in water... but the site says “water clean up” so I’m confused. I haven’t actually used it so does it actually wash off with water...

    Sounds like a great idea!

Lol. I’m thinking that one could “stabilize” about anything but basically we would be just encapsulating whatever in a resin handle. I’m guessing that the green juice is some kind of low viscosity MMA acrylic water based sealer. Probably foundation sealer of some kind.

“Stuff like this” meaning high pressure systems, tanks, pumps and piping etc.. Not trying to be a know it all. I know little about stabilizing.

I didn’t see on the cactus juice site what kind of resin they’re using? Epoxy, polyester etc.. I am a industrial maintenance tech and could certainly build a high pressure chamber if I needed to. Work with stuff like this all the time. Just need more info.... :)

Thanks all for your replies. Doug, that’s sorta where my head is at, great woods work for a long time. That being said if there is a new technology that makes good better then heck yeah, I will use it. I could pull a vacuum on a chamber and do that without too much trouble, just don’t know the...

I must’ve been living under a rock the last few years. I signed up here at KD and have been reading ever since about “stabilizing “ wood. Tell me about this? Is this a vacuum tank full of epoxy that pulls it all the way into the fibers? Enlighten me.
