    Starting in Kydex

My sincere apologies Tracy! I did not in any way mean to bash, offend, or anything else. I got focused on the subject and was not thinking of anything else. I have deleted my post and ask your forgiveness.

    Felt platen

That's a VSM XK760X in 50 grit. It's the belt I use for both my heavy/50 and 120 grits belts. The backing belt (the rubber/black one) on the rotary platen is tension adjustable. I just found that I like it cranked to just shy as stiff as I can make it.

    Felt platen

That's a screaming good idea for a budget system! I can't say that I understand the scotchbrite needing to be 70".... how would you tighten the 2 x 72" grinding belt? Anyway, it's exactly the principle the rotary platen works off of..... a stiffer backing belt (I think the rotary platens...

    Felt platen

I'm gona throw out a word of warning here. There is a common problem with just about anything you can use for a "soft" type platen face.... that being as you grind, there is either a "wear" or a "crush" factor that you must deal with. What is that? In short, it means that with each grinding...

    Jordan Lamothe Class

Yep! Typical approach to forging is blade tip/blade first for a hidden tang, and handle/tang first for a full tang. And I would bet dollars to doughnuts that you brain is in high gear now! :)

    Brass guard question

AH! Thank for the additional information! Sorry I didn't fully understand. So, if you dealing with refub of a factory knife, I have little doubt there are gona be a lot of sloppy fits. :) My advice is JB Weld. I keep both the regular and the "kwik" varieties in my shop. The regular...

    Brass guard question

If we're talking on a hidden tang, you don't need either if it's fitted correctly. The only thing solder was ever SUPPOSED to be concerning a guards on knives..... was/is as a moisture seal, so that moisture doesn't intrude under the handle material and rot it from the inside out. IF you...

    Canister Damascus

Just some advice on "can" size. I find that more often than not, you need to reduce a can A LEAST 50% to achieve a solid, flaw free billet...and that's assume you make no errors along the way such as Fitz mentioned. The reason I bring this up is because IF you start with 2x2", then take it...

    New shop question

I think that's something that most of us have learned along our journey. I was as guilty as the next guy way back when I started.....buying cheap tool after cheap tool, and then buying them again, and again. I'll let you in on a little secret..... that's why I have such strong opinions on...

Right and Wrong way to "drill out" a full tang

Sure, I doubt the average knife user would be able to discern any difference if just drilling a couple of larger hole in an un-tapered tang. However, based on my experiences, when you combine a couple of larger holes in a full tang, and then taper the tang, there is a very noticeable...

Right and Wrong way to "drill out" a full tang

I see images all over the internet of full tang knives being constructed with a bazillion holes drilled in the tangs. I have never been able to wrap my head around the logic of it. I dear friend recently posted a pic, and I stole it to illustrate my point. (Because I only drill TWO, usually...

    New shop question

IMO.... Compressed air ABSOLUTLY. Just as Ted said.... once you have it, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it! And pay CLOSE attention to what Bob said about materials for a shop air system...if you intend to do it that way. I've also been in shops when PVC pipe used in the air...

    looking for a knew forge

Please..... if you even consider buying that forge, just light your money on fire and use it.... that would likely work better. I gotta be straight up, you simply are not going to get any type of usable forge for that kind of money ($100), whether it's buy or build. If you're going to...

    question cable?????

Along the lines of what Chris is referring to.... I get a LOT of help requests from those without much experience with "cans"... who are confused as to why they don't achieve the pattern, or more to a fine point, the type of pattern they expect. It's almost always the fact that they simply...

    Broach

I made my own for some time, but I gotta tell ya, after using the ones that Johnny Perry, MS makes, there isn't any point. It's worth twice the money I paid for it, and as long as he's offering them.... I'm not even gona waste the time trying anymore. :)

    question cable?????

Two types.... Extra improved plow share, and Extra Extra improved plow share are the two cable type that are best suited to blades. That is what they will be called if purchasing brand new. Before you go there, be warned, while many turn to cable because they think it will be easier then...

    What am I doing wrong?

I've read through all the replies.... and believe John's explanation to be likely. I do have a question.... you don't happen to grip/hold blade in the location with tongs or pliers when quenching do you? I've seen things like that a number of times when folks quenched blade that were...

Quench Tank Build - WIP - Does this make sense?

I gotta say, I'm envious of such clean fabrication skills. I'm what's called a "pile it" welder.... pile it here, and pile it there...until something sticks together! :) Length on a horizontal tank is just whatever YOU need it to be. ;) As the moment, I don't even have a vertical tank...

Quench Tank Build - WIP - Does this make sense?

I've been following along, and love everything you've done. But I guess my only question is.... why limit yourself to only a vertical tank? ;)
