Thanks, Ed. As usual, your response is more than helpful. So would you recommend I stick with 1095 for the core and just used a Hamone for decoration? Or would there be a better steel to use for this Camp/Chopper knife?

The core out of 5160? I'd planned on 1095.........is that a problem? The San Mai (with "whatever" material) would just be for decoration.

Yup. I grew up blowing my nose in a Kleenex, not a tissue. (no matter the brand) My Mother Hoovered the floor, she didn't vacuum it. I'll yield and learn to say Damascus. It's getting easier to say all the time now. Besides, I don't want to rile everyone up over semantics.

If this thread is in the wrong forum, please move it. I've started laying out on paper the exact dimensions of my forge..........showing the inside measurement of the 12" square pipe and the 2 1/2" thick K-26 soft brick all the way around. What I end up with is a forge cavity sized 6 1/4" x 6...

;) Springer82, I know the "big thing" for forge welded materials is more and more and more layers until they look so busy they are dizzy-ing. For my personal tastes as an artist, I believe "less is best". I like the low number of layers because it's much more artistic to my eye. Can't wait...
