    San Mai Question

Thanks for your comments, Ed. Helpful, as always. It sounds as if I'm just trying to make problems for myself. Guess San Mai is way, way, way beyond my skill set. I just thought it would be easier than that. I'm definitely open to a mono steel blade...............but I'm looking...

    San Mai Question

Thanks, Ed. As usual, your response is more than helpful. So would you recommend I stick with 1095 for the core and just used a Hamone for decoration? Or would there be a better steel to use for this Camp/Chopper knife?

    San Mai Question

The core out of 5160? I'd planned on 1095.........is that a problem? The San Mai (with "whatever" material) would just be for decoration.

    San Mai Question

Thanks for the input, Doug. I personally don't care for forge marks remaining on blades.............but my brother seems to like it and the knife would be made to make him happy, though I'm tempted to try and talk him out of it. I totally agree not to forge the bevel on this blade because I...

    San Mai Question

I'm not to the point of even trying San Mai, but I was just sitting here considering what I'd do...........if I could. ;) I'd like to make a heavy chopper for my brother. I want it tough as nails, but also want it to have some flair. My first thought was Damascus, but Walter Sorrell told me...

I've got a "how thick" problem with my forge build.

Yup. I grew up blowing my nose in a Kleenex, not a tissue. (no matter the brand) My Mother Hoovered the floor, she didn't vacuum it. I'll yield and learn to say Damascus. It's getting easier to say all the time now. Besides, I don't want to rile everyone up over semantics.

    Here ya go Kevin

That's a beautiful piece of Damascus, Springer82. (did I done good???);)

Okay, I get it. I'll start using Damascus in the future.

I've got a "how thick" problem with my forge build.

Well...............................if I'm gonna stay true to myself, and since I can't make true Wootz Damascus, I'm hoping someday to try and make pattern welded steel for some blades. ;)

I've got a "how thick" problem with my forge build.

After all of the hulabaloo I caused yesterday, I started searching for it and actually found it just a couple of hours ago. It's long, but fascinating. Would be boring to anyone but a blacksmith. Here ya go: Unless I interpreted it entirely wrong, they indicated "this" was the original...

I've got a "how thick" problem with my forge build.

Thanks for the link. Walter and I go back an forth in e-mails and I highly respect his opinion. So he says in the video that my stance is ignorant...............okay...........but he also ends up with "neither one (opinion on the subject) is right or wrong". So............as I said...

I've got a "how thick" problem with my forge build.

Forge welded steel is not Damascus.........it's forge welded steel. From what I've read and seen, true Damascus steel "makings" is only available from one mine in the world that they know of, and it's not around here. Watched a long video showing a blacksmith working with some historical...

Thanks for your opinion, Ed. I'll take it into consideration.

Yes, I have Wayne, and you have already told me you didn't recommend my build project when I bought all my supplies from you.

    Here ya go Kevin

Try for Alex Steele's 1000 layer count. No seriously, don't bother. I'd love to be able to produce forge welded blades that look like the one you showed in your first picture. Dat dere's plumb purdy!

I've got a "how thick" problem with my forge build.

If this thread is in the wrong forum, please move it. I've started laying out on paper the exact dimensions of my forge..........showing the inside measurement of the 12" square pipe and the 2 1/2" thick K-26 soft brick all the way around. What I end up with is a forge cavity sized 6 1/4" x 6...

;) Springer82, I know the "big thing" for forge welded materials is more and more and more layers until they look so busy they are dizzy-ing. For my personal tastes as an artist, I believe "less is best". I like the low number of layers because it's much more artistic to my eye. Can't wait...
