I've made several rawhide sheaths. Have you decided on the type of rawhide you want to use? I've seen some made from cow rawhide- even some where they basically unwrapped a rawhide chew for material. I like deer rawhide myself - much easier to work with. I picked up some videos by John Cohea...

    New tariff impact on materials

Not looking to discuss pros and cons or get political, just wondering if anyone is seeing prices being affected yet? There are a lot of supplies we use that are imported, steel and abrasives being a couple important ones (some steel comes from Germany and I know Rhynowet comes from Portugal)...

Filet knife with 7” blade. AEB-L steel with some Ivory Juma, G-Carta and G10 liners. That G-Carta takes a looong time wet sanding to get a nice finish. The juma is super easy to work with.

Just off the bench. And EDC in Magnacut and a Santoku style kitchen knife.

    stag and antler

I've used 50/50 BLO and Mineral Spirits per a John Cohea recipe on some antler. Just left the piece in a jar for a day or so, then let it sit to cure for another couple days. I've also used this on some Giraffe scales as a test. I wouldn't call it stabilization in the modern sense though. I...

Hot Shot or Evenheat which one

I've got the Evenheat KH 418 and love it. It's a 120v though. Takes a little more time to ramp up, but I've had no problems with it. Been able to heat treat 1084, 80CrV2, AEB-L and Magnacut without issues. Picked mine up from USAKnifemaker with TAP controller and solid state relay. Planning on...

    No More Viking Axes...

Good news! I've been able to get a total of 10 axes! My brother in law, a cousin and a coworker were able to find some (Georgia, Michigan and PA). That should hold me long enough to find another option. Thank you to everyone that took the time and effort to check their local stores for me!

    No More Viking Axes...

I’ll have to see what if anything changes on the 15th then. Maybe they’ll continue to offer it online only? I’m assuming as a clearance item it’s being discontinued.

They’re made in India according to the label. Central Forge is the HF brand name. Not sure where to go to find out more.

    No More Viking Axes...

I just found out this weekend that Harbor Freight has discontinued their Fireman's Hatchet :( ... I've searched the stores in my area and only found 2 left in stock on clearance. I've got some friends and relatives checking their respective stores, but unless I can lay hands on a bunch, that's...

    Stencils

I use Neutralyte on them. I got it from USAKnifemakers a while ago but I'm not seeing it on the website. Supposed to neutralize the electrolyte if I remember correctly. Windex should work well too.

    Stencils

I've been using TUSTEch for mine. Got a couple of sizes. Keep 'em clean and they last a pretty long time.

I really like this one. Is that butt two pieces of antler to hide hardware? Well done.

What's going on in your shop?

Thanks. I used the method where you heat up the bone and get the dye as cold as you can. Bone goes in the dye (leather dye in this case) and capillary action does the rest.

What's going on in your shop?

Got some Giraffe bone in the works. The finished product is always a bit of a surprise, as I’m never sure how it’s going to take the dye. It’s always got character though.
