    Map arm

Not sure if he is still making them. I have both a GIB and a KMG; the MAP Arm works with both. The work rest is pretty well centered for the KMG but it must be slid all the way to the left for the GIB.

    Grinder In a Box Questions

The gas spring and brackets are like $12 from McMaster Carr. With the improvement they make to overall performance (tracking, and vibration)I would gladly pay many times over. My KMG was converted to direct drive and a gas spring also because of how well the GIB works. I notice with a...

    Grinder In a Box Questions

I would really recommend buying the kit from Jamie. The time spent shopping around is worth more than the pennies you would save having it done locally. My wife bought me a GIB for our 20th anniversary; it rivals my KMG. It does have a few modifications though. Moved the tracking arm...

    HRS and CRS

HRS/Hot Rolled Steel=Mild steel with scale CRS/Cold Rolled Steel=Mild steel without scale Both are mild steel and will not harden for anything. When I started I was fearful of destroying good steel and tried grinding one "practice" knife out of CRS. You will notice that it does not grind very...

Opinions, Experience, Suggestions, Instructions, etc... on Anti-Scale Compound?

Bear in mind this is only good for steels that austenitize in the 1500 degree range. The compound must be applied to a hot blade; approx. 500 degrees. I have a warming program in my oven. Let the blades reach 500 put on the welding gloves and use a very hi-tec plastic spoon to liberally apply...

Opinions, Experience, Suggestions, Instructions, etc... on Anti-Scale Compound?

After Mr. Bump mentioned it a while back I ordered the Brownell's brand anti-scale compound. I have used it since my first knife. It makes a world of difference; I am currently only using O1 as a starter steel. I have a tendency to grind almost to finish dimension before HT. On a couple of...

    A few completed

Thanks for the nice comments fellas. Jim, I was surprised that the "ivory colored" one got a whole lot of attention. All my knives are currently O1 and that one has tan G10 with black liner scales.

    A few completed

I have to weigh my time; work, knives, internet. Work and knives win out; don't post much. So I built my first knife last year Aug/Sept while finishing chemo. I did my first show the beginning of March '11. I think I have completed 16 knives; here's a few. Let me know what you think. P.S...

    This just gets more exciting

Thanks guys. On the tool steel the bluing actually seals the steel and even though it's not perfect it doesn't seem to rust as easily. The sheath is kydex. As an aside; in my day job I work with a lot of cable and wire this design came from my daily need. David

    Trying to figure out...

Bruno: I didn't realize the thong hole doesn't show, I drilled 3 holes in a triangular pattern then connected the dots with a file and lots of sandpaper. If this style of knife seemed popular I would need to have it lazer or water cut, just too much labor for a hole.

    Trying to figure out...

the best place for a new maker to post knife pictures. Here are three more, two without sheaths. Comments and constructive criticism welcome. All three about 7.5" O1 at about 61HRC. Sheepsfoot flat ground the utility and camper high hollow ground. I am a fan of Micarta, so you have...
