i have also used 1/4" oak dowels for handle pins, they have worked well. i may get some black walnut dowels for contrast with a lighter color scale.

try 304/316L. easy to work with and take a nicer polish than 416.

could be related to the pin combined with wood not being completely dry. wood is expanding and contracting around a pin that is not moving.

if you are doing 4 or 5 blades at a time, a 2 gallon tank is plenty big.
