    Bolster Peening?

For getting the pins to be "invisible", one thing I heard from a maker (I think it was Todd Davison, but don't hold me to that), was to let everything sit for a good half hour after peining before cleaning up the bolsters/pins. I don't know if there's any magic to this, but I figured it...

    Bolster Peening?

I don't see any reason to wail on your bolsters like that. I pretty much use the same technique as when I'm pinning my scales. Several light, but deliberate taps will tighten things up very nicely. I use 1/8" pin stock almost exclusively and use an 8 oz. ball-pein hammer for everything. I...

I agree, that's a nice looking blade! I thought I would have mine done by now, but managed to come down with a pretty nasty case of bronchitis that kept me out of the shop for over a week. I've been back at it though, and hope to have things wrapped up before next weekend.

Shop Tip of the Day - Add yours here

I may have posted this before, but here is how I store my files: These are the plastic inserts that come in centerfire rifle ammo screwed into a wood base... these were probably .30-30 rounds, but I think even .223 would be deep enough.

    Bandsaw

I have to agree with everything previously stated. I got lucky a few years ago and found a Jet 4x6 at Menards for under 200. Same setup as the HF model mentioned. Do a little shopping around, or check out pawn shops and craigslist for a 4x6 or portabands. If I ever kill my Jet, I'll probably...

How about a little tease pic? I've got two candidates right now... HT'd but that's it. I'm leaning toward the funkier (in a good way, I hope) of the two... If I manage to hose that one up, I have a more conventional blade. I think you could safely call them both fighters, but plan...

    air brush kit for sheaths?

I imagine any decent airbrush would work fine for leather, but this is the one I've been looking at... http://www.tcpglobal.com/airbrushdepot/ItemDetail.aspx?ItemNo=ABD+KIT-G22-T

I'm sending my blades out to Peters' on Tuesday, so 7/15 shouldn't be a problem. They should be past the Blade show rush by now.

    sanding questions

Those look good! I dig those kiridashi type knives. I would try to find something other than files for your sanding blocks... You said you have some steel now, so that's good. Thicker micarta and G10 work well too. Hand sanding can be tough, especially if you don't have a grinder to run a...

    sanding questions

You should be able to just follow that around with your sanding block. What are you using as a backing for your sandpaper? For flats. I use a piece of hardened steel that has been blanchard ground. It's actually a draw file from brownells, but the back is dead flat. I bring my grinds up...

    sanding questions

Ahmad, are these flat ground or hollow ground blades? Until you are actually doing your post-ht finish sanding, it is not imperative that everything be sanded in one long stroke. And even then, you only worry about that if you are doing a rubbed type finish. For hollow ground blades, I ended...

    Etching Problem

I have an etch o matic. A year or two ago, I made a simple modification (as mentioned in an earlier post) to convert it to use q-tips. All I did was attach a length of 24AWG copper wire from an old network cable to the grid under the pad. Basically, you just coil the other end to the cotten...

    link us up dogs!

Sorry for the necropost, but I linked up the forum...only problem is that most of the banner image links in this thread are broken, so I'm using an old one. Any chance you could either repost or point me in the right direction? http://www.redmonknives.com/links.htm

    finish of knife pins

A method that might help... it's what I've been doing lately on my handles... particularly if they have a lot of contour. With the handles pretty well profiled (but still flat), I will epoxy everything up and use long pins to keep everything in alignment. Once everything is clamped, pull...

    don't know what to do - D2

Just want to add some praise for CPM D2... it is one of my favorite steels to work with at the moment. In fact, I'm trying to finish up a few knives in the little remaining 440c I have left so I can sell them and buy more CPM D2!
