    Like LRB said It's decarb Scale, happens alot when you dont have the air mixture in your gas forge just right, causes bubbles to form under the scale leaving spots like that, if you etch it in acid you will sometimes see the spots again.

    I also use a 110v spotwelder and have never had problems with it. as long as you keep the tips clean and the weld time to a minimum you should be fine.

    Soldering 410 SS to 416 SS?

    Spot welding is easier but you can solder them, the trick is keeping the mating surfaces clean, clean, and I do mean CLEAN! Then useing the correct flux. depending on if your gonna use low temp solder 400* stuff or the high temp stuff 1200*.
