    1st Annual Knife Dogs Awards

I'm sure it's no surprise to anyone but I suggest naming the award after Gil Hibben. There are very few if any who have done as much for knives and knifemaking.

About to embark on my first knife(knives)

Go for it. I agree with what others have said in that you will probably find it a little harder than you imagine. Especially in grinding blades. Grinding is easy to learn but it takes a lot of experience to do it well. Most of us only show our earliest knives to illustrate how far we have come...

Saying Goodbye To My Best Friend

Beautiful story Murph. I am sorry for your loss but you did what you knew you had to do. Your last act to her was one of love and compassion. It is amazing how a dog can become such a huge part of our lives. My little corgi is showing her age and I know I will someday face the same situation...

    Show Schedule 2011

No problem. I always compile a list at the first of the year to see what shows I might be interested in doing so I just thought I would share it.

    440C gummy?

Are you sure it is 440C? Will a magnet stick to it? I don't mean to sound silly but a freind of mind bought a grinder and a bunch of knife blanks from a retiring knifemaker and we discoverd that all of the blanks were non-magnetic stainless.

    440C gummy?

All 440C is definitely NOT created the same. I like to mirror polish most of my knives and I have seen big differences in how different batches of 440C finishes. But I have not noticed any significant difference in grinding it.

    440C gummy?

I have always found 440C to be fairly easy to grind annealed. I wouldn't call it gummy. I hog out my initial grinds with 60 or 80 grit and then go to 120 and 220 before heat treating.

    shipping to Canada

So far I haven't had any problems shipping through US Mail. You do have to fill out a customs form. I usually list it as "camping tool" just to lessen scrutiny.

    Don't Overlook the Gun Shows

I have definitely seen a shift in the shows that knifemakers, knife dealers and knife buyers are attending in recent years. Once upon a time there weren’t nearly as many knifemakers around and there were very few knife shows. If a knifemaker wanted to show and sell his work to the public...

    Looks Like we got hijacked

Yep. For every good site on the Internet there is some low life scum waiting to try and ruin it.

    Show Schedule 2011

Thanks. I always found it frustrating trying to find a comprehensive list so I try to create one each year. I know there are a lot more smaller club shows that I don't have listed and some of the bigger shows have not yet set their dates for 2011. Maybe the mods can make this a sticky for...

Atta girl Darci. There are a bunch of proud uncles here.

    Show Schedule 2011

Below is a list of shows for 2011. I am sure it is not complete but I will edit the original post and add shows as information becomes available. I did include a lot of Gun & Knife Shows in my area (KY, TN, OH, IN) as I am seeing more knifemakers, knife dealers and knife buyers coming back to...

    Photographing steel structure...how?

What? Do you mean packing the edge of a blade by pounding it under a full moon with the tip pointed north doesn't really make a superior blade?!!!! Seriously, I too appreciate the information you share and the efforts you put into your research. I never really thought much about the process...

    Photoshop knife designing

I of the biggest advantages of doing my designs in Photoshop is the uses of layers. Each element can be drawn on it's own layer and then turned on or off, resized, rotated or otherwise manipulated individually. I can draw several guards and easily turn themm on or off to compared how they work...

    SPAM Attack

Ahh....the joys of running a forum and dealing with the constant onslaught of spammers and hackers. That's exactly why I gave up on running a couple of furums. A tip of the hat to those of you who keep this forum running spam-free.

Does anybody else run anything longer than a 72 inch grinding belt?

Cliff is talking about the big floor model grinders like these.

    Questions about a new bandsaw

I am not sure about the horsepower. Mine is 1 HP. The critical thing with steel is that you need the saw to run slow, around 40-70 feet per minute for stainless steel. Wood bandsaw usually run at around 300 feet per minute.
