    The Laser Thread

When you run the "frame", the laser fires and draws a square around the area where the image will be etched. For MM's it let's you know where the mark will be. You can run it multiple times and move the blade around to suit.

    The Laser Thread

So once you've centered your work in Lightburn, and then I center the laser on the work table. Tell it to move to position 8 and 8. That's on the little "move" tab. You just put in 8 for the X axis and 8 on the Y axis. Next, loosen the laser head and slide it up some. Then I put my blade under...

Looking for Identification of this wood

The top kinda resembles a quilted sapele but not exactly the same shade. Unless its been in the sun. Could also be a quilted maple.

    The Laser Thread

Here you go. You can see what Ken was referring to with the mm/m, etc. I generally have it sanded to the 400 range and I'll color the area with a Sharpee. Not sure that it does much but its easy. There are also options for the layer - Fill, Line, Offset Fill. Since I want my letters all black I...

Pry tab on handle of full tang blade-Bad idea?

Hopefully this is just "light" prywork, otherwise I tell clients in my knifecare instructions: 2. Do NOT: Throw, chop, pry or dig with your knife. Get a pry bar, shovel, or axe instead. He could potentially pry something that would cause the handle to flex and cause issues with the scales...

    The Laser Thread

I don't have an air assist either and so far I haven't needed it. The 20 watt laser obviously increases your power and will let you do other projects where you need more power. Cutting cool designs out of wood and then assembling them into various designs is a pretty popular (and potentially...

    The Laser Thread

Get Lightburn, it makes doing the projects easier. I tried LaserGRBL first and it's too basic. You'll eventually want to use the laser for other types of projects.

    Wood Identity

I'd agree that it's Wenge for both. The zig-zag patterns of the black "lines" on the base and the second pic of the football are pretty clear and would seem to match Wenge.

    Pakistani Video

The Sportsmen's Expo in Sacramento has a table or two of those types of knives as well. People all around them ooo'ing and ahhh'ing at the damascus. My son and I just look and laugh. It would be fun to take a good blade and shave steel off of one of theirs right in front of everybody!

What's going on in your shop?

I spoke with Paul Farner (Bos Heat Treat/Buck Knives) and he will do a Hamon. You just have to send it to him with the Clay/Satanite on the blade in the pattern you want. I've been thinking about it when I send him my next batch. You'd have to wrap the blade very carefully I'd imagine?

    How Many Knives at Once...

I usually have batches of 10 or so "underway". They are same blade shape, bolsters, accents, and handle material. I try to keep them at the same "stage" and move them through the rest of the process. I have a deadline for when these generally need to be finished so I know how I'm doing. Then I...

I've had these Koa scales on the shelf for awhile now and finally decided to get them on a blade. They needed to be paired with some Damascus (ABS). Sold within a few mins on FB.
