    oak?

Here is one I made for one of our KnifeDogs with 450 year old white oak. This is from a log that was recovered from a river in Kentucky from when they used to float the logs downriver in huge rafts. Some would sink. This was old growth timber and according to the growth rings it was 350 years...

Where to buy thick guard material

Is there an industrial salvage company in your area? Sometimes you can pick up nice pieces of 300 stainless or brass very cheap.

    Avoiding legal problems

Anyone can set up an LLC. You can do it online for around $100 or less. The downside is that it does complicate your tax reporting.

    Avoiding legal problems

Anybody can sue you for anything, anytime. Sueing and winning are two different things. There is enough case law that is pretty much assumed that a knife is sharp and can cut you. But then, most people would assume that coffee is hot. Where you are more likely to be sued is if your knife...

Robbing parts out of a production knife

I don't see a problem with it. It's no different than buying pins, pivots, etc from a supplier. As a member of the Knifemakers Guild, I like their definition of a handmade knife, simple and to the point. "The Guild recognizes that the term “Handmade Knives” is difficult to define and subject...

    What steel to use?

440C is what I started out with and I still use it a lot. It's a great all-purpose steel, it's readily available and cheaper than the "super steels". It grinds pretty easy, takes a good edge and if you like a polished finish it polishes well.

    Motivation?

Nearly every knife I have screwed up was because I rushed it. It takes less time to do it right once than it does to do it over again.

A sermon for newbies (with bibliography)

I very much agree with reading and watching the videos but nothing, in my opinion, is better than being shown by an experienced knifemaker. Great knifemakers are everywhere and chances are there is one near you. Most are very willing to share their knowledge and experience. My advice to a...
