My Go with the Bushcraft Build-Along Kit - Very Beginner

Looks Great ! A very fine effort on it :35: Your off and running now ! When you make your sheath it's much better to make the belt loop part of the sheath body than the way I did it in the kit tutorial. My leather wasn't long enough from the kit. This isn't a how to make a sheath tutorial...

    Flat Grinding on Disc Sander

I've got cork on my disk which is rounded around the perimeter. The radius in my plunges is miniscule though so the edge of the disc will bump into the plunge instead of tearing it up. If your plunge is more rounded you may get a different result than I do. No cork may also cause it to bite...

    My latest Chef's Knife

Sounds spot on to me. FWIW- I think VERY FEW folks would notice a difference between what you've got and thinner geometry or steeper sharpening angles. Typical folks who may want to push the limits will sharpen in their own preferred style etc. For 99.9% of users I think you nailed it. -Josh

    My latest Chef's Knife

Looks good ! I'm not personally a big fan of a ricasso like this on a chef but to each their own :) Please don't misinterpret that as a criticism just not my preference. Looks like a great job on that style. Are you talking 15 degrees per side for a total of 30 ? IMHO that would be as...

HHH Knives HAMMER IN! 3rd Annual

You're correct there ! They would be wondering what planet we were from rolling in clad in full artic gear in the beginning of October. I'd have to dress like Ralphie's little brother Randy from The Christmas Story.

Double guard and framed handle, rear bolsters too

Bruce, Squeezing the guard is an EPIC technique. Thanks for sharing that with us :) As these guys said for brass, bronze, nickel silver, heat to cherry and water quench to anneal. They do work harden rather quickly too so often its wise to anneal multiple times if forming a lot. You are...

    Shop Lighting advice needed

Why not replace the ballasts. Easy, inexpensive, and fluorescent lights are pretty energy efficient I thought ? (reserve the right to be incorrect though ;) ) -Josh

    Problem with Drill Press

Thanks for all the drill doctor comments. Have been thinking about getting one for small diameter bits but guess I'll pass on that idea. My opinion on the OP's drilling issues- Unlikely that it's a problem with the drill itself. If the press turns the bit without slipping it's doing what...

New guy, probably not a new mistake (HT)

A couple things. The color out of the temper may be deceiving a little. Things like degarb and oil from your hands touching the blade or wiping it before putting it in the tempering oven will have an effect on the colors that show out of the temper. A sharp file will bite after tempering...

Question on Kitchen knife handle hardware

I counter sunk roughly .015 LESS than the thickness of the head. This way the heads are still sticking up a teeny bit when bottomed out in the hole. I didn't attempt and wouldn't recommend a hammer for installation. Without an Arbor press I would close the jaws of the drill press chuck and...

Question on Kitchen knife handle hardware

FWIW I just used some stainless cutlers rivets on a pair of steak knives. They were a breeze to use and look great. No clamps needed for glue up. I put the rivet halfs in one scale and epoxied up then set the rivets with my arbor press. Too Easy and look clean just like a corby. I totally...

    No Weld Grinder questions

Just to clarify on the poly wheels. I got a 2" and a 3" The 2" melted in short order. I caught it fairly quickly and switched back to my aluminum idlers. The 3" I've never had a problem with. I run it as the top wheel on my belt conversion. However there is ZERO additional friction heat...

    No Weld Grinder questions

Andrew, You're probably correct. Probably a Poly Wheel. Belt friction melted the poly and turned it into a small wheel. I've got a melted 2" poly wheel and I would NOT recommend a poly wheel in a small diameter. Stick with an aluminum idler or spend the $ on a regular contact wheel like...

    No Weld Grinder questions

That little small wheel is NOT going to work on your flat platen. The smaller the wheel the higher the RPM of the bearings. Those poor things are probably turning 15000 RPM and will overheat in no time flat. Go with a 2" idler down there like this-...

    Thinking About a Grinder Build.....Questions

Hi Kevin ! On a grinder build reducing fabrication will most likely be a false economy IMHO. Taking the time to do it right the first time will payoff in the long run. I would personally not use any parts from a craftsman 4x36 to build a 2x72. You'll have FAR more fab in trying to use that...
