Old Dog Learning A New Trick

Very cool, I keep thinking about one of those myself. What kind did you get? The ones capable of etching the metal we use are kinda spendy!

    Might need a break

That happens to me with clients and what they want. 98% want drop point hunters and no matter what, I can't seem to change that. Speaking of which, time to grind 8 more.

2022 KITH Received from chrisstaniar and it's a Beauty!

Thanks Chris!! Thats actually the first small chopper style like that I've made. I have made cleavers and smaller cleavers but not quite the same. I use those stands all the time for a client that does quantity orders.

What's going on in your shop?

Lol, I've done that many times. Take a pic and there's some dang smudgely looking thing on it and I'm like what the heck is that? Then I look closer and it's my face or hand.

Break in the rain here in norcal, mid 30's. Too warm around here for me. Current temp isn't bad.

Got a Great Laugh from Some eBay Blades...

A fair number of them do have good fit and finish, etc. If they used good steel then you're right, they'd have good knives. The funny thing is, they go to a lot of trouble to forge the "metal", get the patterns, etc., so why not just go that extra step and get some decent steel?

Got a Great Laugh from Some eBay Blades...

yeah the crappy blades are pretty rampant. I get people asking me a few times per week “…I bought this knife on facebook/ebay/etsy and it was super cheap, but it wont stay sharp” or “why are your knives so expensive compared to ebay/etsy/FB?” They know people are starting to get wise to the...

    Help indentifying

I suspect it's something like Rattlesnake Custom Knives or Rattler Custom Knives, etc. Only a guess though. Best bet would be to google names like that and see what comes up

    Help indentifying

Can you get a clearer picture of that makers mark on the blade? The name is tough to make out. I can see the snake and the word knives but that's it. If you can make out that name, then google the name and you may find them.

    DeMo 2022 Kith

Bolsters can be "challenging" (Read in lots of cursing). Everything Dennis said nails it - All surfaces perfectly flat, pin holes aligned, etc. Getting pins to completely disappear or blend in with the bolsters is the ideal, but it doesn't always happen (more cursing). Brass is generally more...

    Garbage steel

Yeah, lots of problems with that blade. Why don't you just send that on over to me so you don't have to torture yourself thinking about it! ;)

    Guard for full tang knife

so, on a bowie that I made recently it was a full tang setup. I later decided I wanted a mokume gane guard instead of a bolster. So I cut off the extra material that was making the tang too wide for the guard. Then I put the guard on and then welded the old piece of tang back on. All the welds...

What's going on in your shop?

So it ain't all knives in the shop. This was a school project for my son. He brought it home for the final stuff - mounting the pickups, blemish cleanup, tru-oil coats, etc. We bought the wood locally. It's Ca Claro Walnut for the body. The neck is flame maple but that was purchased pre-made...
