    Snakewood finish

John, I've heard some of the stories but as oily as it is I can't imagine how it could dry out that much in a short time and it sure as the dickens won't absorb water. My guess is that it wears just about the same as any of the other stabilized wood we use.(I feel like an expert on Snakewood...

What's going on in your shop?

I've gotten busy all of a sudden. More than I want tot be. Got a big 'ol Camp Knife out of 154-CPM, 2 mid sized hunters out of O1, another Hunter/Skinner/Chopper out of 154-CPM, A Hunter out of W-2 clayed up for a Hamon and a little EDC for my Grandson. Those three Ironwood handles and bolsters...

    An attempt at a Hamon

Bubba, That little gem of information is something I have never seen posted on Knifedogs (or anywhere else for that matter) and I have seen Parks 50 mentioned 100's of times. Thank you. I'm going to clay this knife up today and I'll post some pics. Then I'm on my way to NAPA to pick up a couple...

    An attempt at a Hamon

John, I sent you a PM. The black line is just marker showing where I plan to put the clay. I rough ground it with 80 grit and marked it. Left the edge at about 1/16". If you think I'm ready to go I'll clay it up tomorrow and post some pics. Also, after heating it like you told me should I...

A couple simple Edc drop points

Tendick, you are one of my hero's. Mainly, just because you real name is Tendick (I can't imagine what that was like growing up), but also because you are a hell of a knifemaker! Everything you make is special. Wallace

    McCaffery's Tru Oil Finger

As I have stated in another post where I posted my last finished knife I put 12 coats of Tru Oil on that knife "per Ed's video" and I did. What Ed fails to tell you n his vidio is that you will end up with a Tru Oil finger using this method. The stuff will not wash off and using Ed's method of...

    Man Sized Hunter/Skinner/Chopper

Wow, Bruce, coming from you I consider that quite the compliment, maybe I won't quit knifemaking after all. :1: Its new daddy is going on Safari in Africa and wanted a knife that looks the part. Thanks, Bruce Wallace

    Carved dyed bone skinner

It is a good conversation and I think I'll join in. I've gone to a hybrid of what you guys do. I do take orders and when I get one I stop everything I'm doing and build it. The cost to my customer for that "Premier" service is an extra $100 up front then they pay my regular price when it's...

    Man Sized Hunter/Skinner/Chopper

Thanks, Guys. I found Snakewood to be very similar to Desert Ironwood, very dense and oily. It seemed to polish itself even when sanding with larger grits. This blade is finished with Tru Oil but I doubt it needs any finish at all. Overall, I love the look and working it wasn't too bad. Thanks...

    An attempt at a Hamon

Doug, Thanks for your help. I have noticed that dark shadow but didn't know what it was. I'll watch closer from now on. See above about the magnet. Wallace

    An attempt at a Hamon

Well, thank you Rex, It's nice meeting you too. I sincerely appreciate your help and I am listening. Yes, I do know how to use a magnet in the heat treat process and use it every time even though I am getting to understand the different colors of steel pretty well. Thanks again. Wallace

What are the best grinders that a man who wants to one day be a pro buy

I've been making knives about a year and a half. I used a HF 30" grinder for over a year. I bought a Pheer and it's great. Works for me. Wallace

    An attempt at a Hamon

Rex, Thank you so much. I posted the knife and, no, I didn't etch it after putting the satin finish on it. I'm thinking that the problem is my Rube Goldberg heat treat system. Here is what I do:(See the photos above) I clamp the end of the handle of the knife with a long pair of vice grips...

    An attempt at a Hamon

McClellan, thanks for the advice. I'm looking forward to the rest of it. I finished this knife and couldn't get the Hamon to show up so I just put a Satin finish on it. I just posted it a minute ago - see what you think. Thanks again Wallace

    Man Sized Hunter/Skinner/Chopper

Well . . . . This isn't as good as I hoped it would turn out but I like it anyway. This is a big knife for a big man. The handle is slightly oversized and the blade is broad. If you look closely you can see the slightest hint of a Hamon. If the Hamon was better I would love it. The specs are...
