    Heat Treat Question

Thanks, so the 1080/1084 doesn't get the scale like the 01? Difference in heat requirements? "Heat to just past non-magnetic, then quench"? Would 1095 work? I actually have a bar of that arriving today.

    Heat Treat Question

Hey guys, I have a new question...I am using a two-brick propane forge for heat treating and Canola oil for my quench. I would prefer to be a bit more "high speed" but this is what I have to work with at the present time. So, my first few knives were successfully heat treated with this method...

    Problems with finish

Thanks guys, all great information. I have watched Nick Wheelers video and it made a lot of sense. Few things I'm gonna change up: Ive been using the 3M wet/dry red sandpaper from Lowes, I'll be ordering some higher quality paper tomorrow. Also, Ive been using a small homemade 1-1/2" by 2"...

    Problems with finish

Thanks for the reply John, it is respectively: 150,220,320,400 (3M wet or dry-red); 600,800,1200,2000 (3M wet or dry-black), I'm using windex as a lubricant and clean cotton t-shirt rags to wipe down after each piece of paper I go through. The picture makes it look worse than it is, but still...

    Problems with finish

Hey guys, you have all been helpful so far....I got another issue hopefully some of you may have an answer for. I hand sanded this knife from 150g to 800g grit for two days, heat treated last night then began sanding with 320 and worked my way up to 2000g. So, problem number one: I have sanded...

    New (to me) Grinder

And thank you for yours...I appreciate all the help. I'm going to get started on the platen "plate"(?) this weekend while I wait on belts, couldn't find any locally.

    New (to me) Grinder

Thanks Ed, makes more sense now....so the belt is ALWAYS in direct contact with the full surface of your platen (glass face in this case) thus the need to reduce heat, ie glass, etc. US Army, 528th USAAG, Cakmakli, Turkey 92-94

    New (to me) Grinder

Thanks Ed, that was very helpful! I will eventually move up in machines, however right now my next investment will be an oven (using the 2-brick propane forge now). Anyway, back to the platen.....when I look at the belt and platen on this machine from the side it appears that there is maybe 1/4...

    New (to me) Grinder

Ed, I checked out your link and I like your ideas! As I am VERY new to machine grinding, there are a few things that don't quite sink in yet (use of glass on the platen and why, inability to grind plunge cuts from the left side) but I will sort it all out, although I may be hitting you guys up...

    New (to me) Grinder

Thanks for the comments guys...it was missing the 8" wheel and other small wheel attachments. So, I talked him out of his old metal bandsaw too (see pic) It needs a little TLC. Looking into MAYBE trying to mount it vertically somehow... Andrew, yes....I meant a Wilton Square Wheel....I was so...

    New (to me) Grinder

Hey guys, new user here...I've been using a filing jig up until today (posted a few pics of my WIPs in another thread) and just bought an old Wilkins Square Wheel Grinder about 30 minutes ago. Guy selling it didn't know what it was and I think I got a smoking deal ($500.00). I'll pick it up...
