    HT Oven Help

I'm not sure I can offer any help with what is wrong - but by comparison, the EvenHeat KF18 has a much larger chamber, same rated wattage, will reach 1000F in 12-15 minutes, 1950F in under an hour. It has soft firebrick walls and a stainless sheet wrap around that.

    Slow Oven and Timing

One of the reasons we don't put foil wrapped blades in a hot oven is that if the foil is well sealed, the rapid expansion of air inside the envelope can blow up the envelope like a bursting balloon. There are products available other than foil. The results aren't quite as clean, but they're...

How different is a single speed motor vs a variable

Added to the value of our dollar (About 91 cents US even before exchange fees) there are brokerage fees to deal with - not to mention Sellers who got burned shipping to Canada and will no longer ship here. On that note, Kudos to the ones who still do.

How different is a single speed motor vs a variable

True variable speed is going to be way outside your budget - probably $600 - $800 more. Within your budget, you could get a pulley setup which would give you some speed steps. I have never known anyone who was sorry they got variable speed. Single speed is often the starting point for budget...

My firstwebsite is up. Looking for feed back.

Nice. It was slow to load initially, but that may be my rural, unpredictable connection. I'd like to see descriptions under fixed blades and kitchen knives, similar to what you have for the available knife.

Temp Rated SS foil for heat treating

Foil temp ratings vary by supplier on the same product. AFAIK, there are only two types - 321 and 309. I only use the 309. It is the higher temp version and works just fine on Elmax and beyond. You need to make envelopes out of the foil. Double fold the edge seams and press them down with...

The use of foil during heat treat.

I agree! I like Turco for the liquid quench stuff.

    1 x 30" belt life

Good input from both above. Also consider how little sandpaper there is in one of those belts - 30 sq. inches. That's less than a third of a single sheet of sandpaper. Rob!

The use of foil during heat treat.

It's not necessary. It's just a very useful tool for atmosphere control - and atmosphere control, generally is necessary. Other methods would include forge atmosphere, inert gas, vacuum, paints, powders and limiting time at temperature. Done right, foil is nice because it will handle high...

Normalizing and heat treating in sub zero tempratures

5160 is one of my demons, so I'll just recommend sending it to Ed Caffrey for HT. :-) As for the D2, I think your anvil / heavy bar solution should work as well as quench plates. Remember to leave it in the envelope till cool. This makes it cleaner and also minimizes one sided cooling while...

    What difference does .......

Roger, your question is a it broad and covers half of the entire science of heat treat. (The other is time) I suspect there is something specific you are looking for. If you can tell us what steel you are looking at on that chart - and what performance characteristics you'd value, we might be...

    International shipping Question for knifemakers.

X2 what George said about customs fees and taxes to the buyer - particularly Europe. I've had customers spittin' mad at me because their government added HUGE fees to the parcel. It's a point that should probably be discussed when the knife is ordered - but it could be a real damper on closing...

Talk to me about Norax U936 Belts

Thanks for the props Frank, but I have to damper them I'm afraid. Our liability insurance won't allow us to sell outside Canada. We keep looking for something, but can't find it. A few weeks ago, a company quoted us based on 5% US sales. The premium went from $1600 a year to $6000 per...

    Heat treat oven

I like Rudy's 3 year formula. Actually, I don't like it at all, but oh so true!. :-) On a slightly different angle, you "need" something in response to a problem or deficiency. Is there something about your knives that isn't turning out right? Do you even know if your knives are turning out...

    Steel won't harden need help.

Possibly related. One of my customers recently called with HT problems on some ALDO 1084 1/4 x 2 that he bough from me. He is HTing in kiln, quenching in DT48 and using a Rockwell tester. What he's doing is working for 1095 - but with this bar, he's getting 30s and 40s. All I had left in...

    1hp Motor

Hmmm.... Once again, I offer a slightly dissenting opinion. For me, knife making is about finesse more than power and speed. I have 2 variable speed grinders and both are 1 HP. Having said that, I agree, you'll rarely be upset that you bought too much machine. Rob!
