I just used Potassium Permanganate to darken the stag on the Bowie I just made, but I can't get anything close to this! I wish I could...

Does anyone know how to get a finish like this on stag? It almost looks like it was burnt...

Thanks everyone! I'm finally getting to the point where I'm satisfied with my work. Not so satisfied that I won't continue to challenge myself and keep trying to improve though!

Not quite as stunning as I'd hoped, but I am happy with it none the less. Alabama Damascus Steel with an 8" blade and 5" handle. Brass guard and stag horn scales with brass pins. Balance point is right where the blade meets the guard. Razor sharp and ready for action...

Based on the full tang Bowie I'm working on I need to include more holes!

I have to agree, that is great design! Lot of holes in that handle, weight reducing I assume...

So I dipped the Damascus blade today and I decided to go with some nice real Stag for scales.

Welcome! I have no experience with the Coote grinder, but the best thing I ever did to any grinder was make it variable speed. So much easier to grind when you're not running full tilt!

Sounds and looks like a nice material for knife scales. Any links to where it's sold?

Any suggestions on keeping the Ferric Chloride off the brass guard when dipping the blade? I was thinking Vaseline or something.

Thanks for the detailed reply. The bone scales are just lying on the tang for a color comparison. I do think I'm going to need to shape the guard a little different but that should be easy. I'm going to think on it a bit more. I may keep it if I go high end. I'm going to have to ask too much if...

What air tool did you buy and where? I'm only finding expensive ones...

If that's the case, I'll need to reshape the guard. The tang on the blade is the exact width as those Mammoth scales...
