    Drying scales in dehydrator

That sounds right. Average indoor humidity along the east coast is around 30 percent, depending on the time of year, how close you are to the actual coast, and how you heat your house/shop.

    Ricasso?? What’s the big deal?

Well, to many of the very well established makers that I know, it is a big deal. The ABS teaches about it to a great extent. As some have already said, it's the foundation of a knife, it is the straight, parallel platform from witch the whole rest of the knife is gauged and built. That being...

    Drying scales in dehydrator

That sounds very high. It would rust steel. The highest I've ever heard of was in the 30's. You must have a huge problem of handle movement when you ship a knife to someone. Where do you live?

Yes it's Ben Abbott. A show like this only continues to be successful if it gives the viewers what they want to see. Things soon start to get stale if they don't let the show evolve. I can't tell you what's coming up but I can tell you it will be exciting, stay tuned.

Drastic changes in both temperature and humidity will crack mammoth ivory like that. We keep our ivory in the shop all the time where it is a consistance temperature and humidity. We let the ivory cure for a year before we use it.

We have a vacuum stabilizer that we dye with when we dye. If I am not using the vacuum we sand the handle to the finished size and shape, up to four hundred grit. We flood the surface with dye twice, let it sit for a half hour or so. Wipe it dry and let the die dry over night. Then sand to six...

Got it, it's more clear to me now. I can respect your opinion on this. I was having trouble on the other.

Wood that is too dry when you put it on a knife is just as bad as wood that it not dry enough when you put it on. The most ideal thing to do is match the moisture content of the wood (and any natural material) to the average moisture in the air where the knife is going to live. At home here in...

I am with you on point one and part of point two, but you know the show was not created to contribute anything positive to our craft or community, though I think it did and does. It was created to be entertaining and to make money for it's producers. It is and it does. I vehemently disagree...

John, Buddy, take a breath.:):D:p Check your blood pressure. The tests are designed to make a knife fail on purpose so that somebody has to go home, right. If you were literally splitting hairs with a knife, it would be really hard to judge. After having said all that though, I do have to point...

That's part of every show, the first two rounds are at the "set" the third round has always been at the home forge. There may be just a couple of exceptions but I haven't seen them.

Each of those attendees don't pick just one table and visit it, they walk the whole floor, some of them make two or three trips around the floor. There is more interest in knives and knife making now due to the show than there ever was. Before the show started, interest in hand made knives was...

I don't see it that way at all. The Blade show last year broke all records for attendance, 11,000 attendees in one week end. That is all from the show. Most people I know are selling knives, not at a discount. It may be that your particular market has been saturated either by your knives or by...
