    Satin finnish

Frank, After playing with it some more I suspect the swirls may be from a previous grit (pre Mobil 1!) so I will experiment some more and report back later. It does seem like keeping it pretty wet is important. Thanks again! Paul

    Satin finnish

I just spent about 30 minutes working on a blade with the Mobil 1 and I have mixed results so far. It's hard to be scientific about this, but my subjective initial impressions are as follows: Good: -I think it may cut cleaner and faster than the WD-40 I normally use -I think the finish...

    Satin finnish

I sure will Frank; thank you again for sharing the tip! Do you have a theory as to why this works? I thought the fishhooks were caused by the change in direction, and resulting side to side movement of the paper, when sanding in both directions. I'm wondering if that's really the cause...

    Satin finnish

The quart I bought, which I didn't have a chance to crack open and try out this weekend, is 5W-20...do you think that is an OK weight/viscosity for this purpose? I'm excited and hopeful about this working, as swirlies have so far won the war against me, if not every battle...

    New knife & sheath

Both knife and sheath look very nice, and they compliment each other very well as a 'package'. Great job!

What has Josh Dabney been up too ?

Nice work Josh! Looks like the dagger turned out great...how difficult was it to do the double grind?

I just bought a quart today on my way home. I'll hopefully have time to try it over the weekend...thanks for the tip!

Here is my favorite (although maybe not the 'best') of the few that I've owned: Sorry for the questionable pic quality...

    Just about finished

Very very nice, classy designs! I particularly like the top two even though I'm not generally drawn to bone handles all that much.

Very nice first knife, Chris. What are the specs (handle material, steel, dimensions, etc.?) Congrats on the achievement!

Thank you for your nice comments Dave and Art! I actually would like to start selling some knives relatively soon if I can summon the courage to do so...

    Inexpensive 1750 RPM buffer?

Erin, I hear what you are saying, but I'm tool 'poor' in addition to being cash poor. At least I started with almost nothing, but have since added the grinder, drill press, etc. since I took up knife making. Aside from possibly the drill press, I had nothing that I could have adapted for...

    Inexpensive 1750 RPM buffer?

Yes, would this work? I've read within the context of a belt grinder or similar application that this wouldn't really work, but if I remember that has to do with limiting the torque and/or HP of the motor in a way that would affect utility in that application. I would think with a buffer that...

Small hunter in Ironwood w/ SS bolsters

Thank you Mr. Bump, I appreciate your feedback and nice words! I have just been in a learning/practice/hobby mode up until now, but I am recently starting to think about buying/building an etcher coming up with a logo/name to etch on my blades and perhaps consider beginning to sell some. I...

    Inexpensive 1750 RPM buffer?

petie, that sounds like a great option for the future; thanks for the tip. Shankmaker, I will be extremely careful with everything, especially at first since I've never owned a buffer before and this one is fast enough to be scary. I don't anticipate buffing anyting and everything, just the...

    My new maker's mark

Nice work and design, Travis! I just completed my first stainless bolstered knife as well. I got them peened on OK, but then I didn't really know how to go about shaping them so I got some help from a local maker. Did you do most of the shaping before attaching the wood scales?

    Sharpfinger style knife

Good work Frank! I've never owned one, but always liked that classic looking design and it looks handy. That handle material is also very nice looking. I've been slow to warm up to dyed and stabilized woods, but I'm appreciating them more recently.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the nice words! Critiques are also very welcome if anyone has anything to offer in that respect. Smitty, welcome to AZ! The next 8 months of so of weather are spectacular and seem to make the brutal summers worth it. I'm in Chandler, so we probably are not too...
