    5160 & Black Walnut Camp/utility w/SS bolsters

Hi guys, I haven't been around all that much and have been a little slow making knife progress lately, but I finally have one finished (except for sharpening and sheath top-coating) that I plan to offer for sale sometime in the near future. This is a stout knife, being of 1/4" stock, but...

Grindig after HT, pros and cons?

I used to do most/all of my grinding, and some hand sanding, before HT. Since I've gotten a variable speed quality grinder, my last few have been ground maybe 70% pre-HT and the rest afterwards. The only downside I've seen so far (and I may be doing something incorrectly) is that post HT...

    Drawing a fine line [ BASHING ]

BossDog, I would like to know where you consider the "line" to be on this forum, if you wouldn't mind. I think Kelly may be referring to a recent post I made where this was brought up to me by a moderator (and it's been eating away at me since...)

    Basketweave stamp problems

Hmm, I'll have to think about the fingernail thing. I (try to) play guitar, so I have very short nails on my stamp-holding hand and longer (some would say creepy long) ones on my hammer hand. I'll have to check my technique to see if I'm doing that somehow. Thanks!

    Knives 5 & 6

Those holes look cool, but do you think they could compromise strength at all? (I hate to admit it, but I'm not really even sure what an Entry tool is...I assume something to wedge and pry open doors, etc.?) I seem to recall seeing a tutorial someplace where a contact wheel or small wheel...

    Knives 5 & 6

Those look cool, Chris. I like the idea of the textured micarta...I'll have to give that a whirl sometime. Do the holes in the blade serve a function, or are they just for aesthetic purposes?

    Rough-n-Ready Cowboy Bowie

Looks good Josh! I like the blued blade with the elk scales. Do you mind if I borrow (steal?) the landscape gravel tooling idea? I have an endless array of those 'tools' just outside my door ;-)

    ATS34 and Curly Maple

Thanks Frank! So no oil finish or anything else, just natural wood that's sanded and buffed?

    Basketweave stamp problems

... Kelly, I have the Chuck Burrows DVD but have not seen the one you mention. I do think the leather was too wet for sure on the first side, but I also think it was a problem with alignment. I first drew a straight line (probably faintly visible in one of the pics), and stamped that row...

    ATS34 and Curly Maple

Nice knife Frank! I like the swedge (I'm still too chicken to try one!)and the curly maple. How did you finish the wood?

    Basketweave stamp problems

I'm having trouble keeping my basketweave stamping aligned properly and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Can anyone help troubleshoot by looking at these photos? The leather is Wickett & Craig 7/8 oz shoulder, which seems to take the tooling much differently than the Tandy (leather) that I...

Help/input/suggestions for black walnut (Tru-oil) finish

Thanks to everyone who offered their suggestions and comments; I appreciate it. I'm not 100% sure what a filled pore looks like so I can't evaluate how successful my efforts were, but overall I like the finished product. I'm not a huge fan of stabilized woods (I just like real wood as opposed...

Help/input/suggestions for black walnut (Tru-oil) finish

Thanks for the input Josh and James (glad to hear you are doing well)! I guess the exact species doesn't matter all that much, although if/when it comes time to advertise this one for sale I would like to be as accurate as possible. I went ahead and tried taking the gloss down a little with...

Help/input/suggestions for black walnut (Tru-oil) finish

James, I haven't seen your name in ages...where have you been? Here is a pic of a knife I found on Google images that is supposed to be Claro walnut. It sure looks similar to what I have: http://www.cadesbowsandblades.com/Pictures/Antler%20and%20Wood/Claro%20Walnut%20Burl.jpg I think I'll...

Help/input/suggestions for black walnut (Tru-oil) finish

Hi Stan, It wasn't with 2000 grit, but I wet sanded it twice to fill the pores per the Tru-oil instruction sheet. I think I used 400x the first time and 600x the second (as I recall, the instructions recommended something even coarser than those.) I first applied a generous coat, let dry for...

Help/input/suggestions for black walnut (Tru-oil) finish

Thanks Larry, if it was Claro Walnut that would help explain why it doesn't look quite like I was expecting it to from what I've seen of other black walnut examples. I looked at some Google images of Claro walnut, and I think you may very well be correct. So, you think more of the oil, dry...

Help/input/suggestions for black walnut (Tru-oil) finish

I haven't been doing all that much knife stuff lately but I'm finally close to finishing one and I'm not sure what to think about the wood finish I'm getting. This is natural black walnut (at least that's what it's supposed to be), and I'm applying a Birchwood Casey Tru-oil finish. This is my...

How long does hand sanding take you?

Thanks Kelly, I have 120x through 600x equivalent Trizact Gators which I think are somewhat comparable to the Norax structured abrasive belts. I may order some of those to try down the line, but when I run through the grits on the gators up to 600x, I frequently end up back at 220x by hand...
