What's going on in your shop?

First attempt at a stone wash finish. We’ll see how much a Kydex sheath scratches it.

Great pics. I like the natural background. What's the handle material on this one? Love the color and grain pattern.

Is that Hansen's newer material with metal shavings? How do you like it? I recently got some of the Brook Trout to try out.

Love the liner combo- G10? Are you using any pigment in the epoxy? Looks like a black line between the layers.

Finished up another one. A hunter in AEB-L with figured walnut handle, the guard is 3 pieces, blued steel and carved bronze. This one is for a young man who’s a fan of the Percy Jackson books (hence the trident). Up next will be an appropriate sheath.

What's going on in your shop?

That’s what I looked for first. I was sure the kids had some from a years ago visit to Crystal Cave but they did not. Wanted to use something I had on hand but got me thinking I might want to order some for the future.

What's going on in your shop?

Ok…need opinions. Too much? It’s for a 9 year old that loves the Percy Jackson books. It kinda hits me with that vibe. They’re tiny glass beads if you can’t tell. Sean’s diamond comment sent me in this direction to see where I ended up.

What's going on in your shop?

I'm digging around to see what's on hand that I can use. Black epoxy is the fallback, but I think I may have some other options. Was looking to see if I had any turquoise pieces. Looking at the photos again, maybe diamonds is the correct answer, they do look like gem settings...

What's going on in your shop?

Hope everyone had a great 4th of July. Taking advantage of a nice holiday weekend to put some time in the shop and hopefully finish some projects. The cold bluing worked decently. Learned that the metal needs to be very clean to get a good finish. Still have some fitting issues to correct...

Cold Bluing Steel - Does hardening make a difference?

Thanks for the reply. I have a piece of 4130 that I wanted to try using. Guess I should just experiment a bit, but wanted to see what others may have experienced using it.

Cold Bluing Steel - Does hardening make a difference?

Like the title says, does hardening a piece of steel (guard, fitting, spacer) have any impact on the finish provided by using Birchwood Casey Cold Blue? I'm working on a hidden tang and was thinking I'd try that as a finish on the guard and spacer.

    Carbide tipped hammer

I picked one up before trying AEB-L for the first time, knowing warpage would almost certainly be in my future (it was). They work great!

    Gator Piss

You can neutralize it with something like baking soda and then pour it down the drain.

    SHINTO FILE

I haven't tried a shinto file yet, but I have switched to using rasps for shaping my handles. I have a 3-piece set of Narex cabinet rasps and a 6-piece set of much smaller 6 inch rasps (think needle file size). Since I switched to rasps, the symmetry and even ness of my handles has improved. I...

    Help Identifying a Phenolic Material

I'll probably be able to tell more once I start cutting into it (grain, smell, color). From sanding it just a little, looks like it will polish up nicely. Thanks for the insight on blocks vs. scales. Our shop is moving to a new facility this spring/summer and a lot of stuff is getting...
