    Filet O Thumb

Peter, does this make us "Numb Thumb Brother's"? I remember you telling me about your incident. I bet you weren't the first fisherman to do that sort of thing. Today is the 4th week after my accident. The flesh on the back of the thumb is healed up now but the other side will probably take a...

    Filet O Thumb

Good point. I'm sure for what this thumb cost you could get a state of the art table saw.

    Filet O Thumb

As I look back the first job I got when I moved up to Oregon was to replace a fellow that had cut his leg while using a Skil saw. I think there may have been a wedge stoping the guard from working properly. I use my portaband to do most my cutting now. Funny how that thin blade from time to...

    Filet O Thumb

The blade hit my right thumb. The wood started to smoke which made me close my eyes for a split second and then the thumb hit the blade. When I used the saw all the time I always used push stick. Now I use the saw once or twice a year.

    Filet O Thumb

3 weeks ago today I was getting started on a handle for a rustic knife blade that had been kicking around my shop for close to ten years. Just had to make one cut on my 45 year old table saw and before I knew it I was holding my right hand and thumb which was still attached in my left hand...

Things that are overlooked by most new'ish makers

The majority of new makers start off by making full tang knives. After that its stick or hidden tangs and from what I have seen they all over look the very important blade/guard/handle junction. John Doyle hit the nail on the head when he wrote this: "On a hidden tangs especially, it is wise...

    A few thoughts on filework

The late Wayne Goddard use to like doing embellishments. He had told me about a knife he had made that he had also scrimshawed that he was quite proud of. He said he had sold it at a show and the customer had offered him an extra couple hundred bucks to remove the scrimshaw. I don't recall Wayne...

    Harpoon clip Bowie

Nice job on the knife! I have never cared for the harpoon look. To me it takes away for the flow of the knife. I'd like it better if the blade were ground to the bottom of the false edge. Yes, I'm a bit old school. Is there a finish on the handle?

    Deer Crown Skinner & Sheath

Starting to get back into making sheaths for my knives and actually starting to enjoy it. Forged the little blade out of 1084 I had purchased for Aldo when he first became the NJ Steel Baron. The little blade is 3 1/2", a wrought iron thing and then the deer crown handle. The knife is right...

    Pastor's Knife

First time with this shape ricasso and will be doing it again. My turn, I'm assuming the black thing above Redeemer Forge is an anvil, is that an original design?

    Pastor's Knife

Thanks..... As far as the handle goes its sand, sand, sand. Dyed it with the same dye I use on the sheath.. Then sand, sand some more. I used a water based finish that a hardwood floor finisher had given me. I'll need to check on the name. I put 4 or 5 coats on with a light sanding between...

    Pastor's Knife

Yes it does harden up however this rebar I have been using was made in the mid 90's. I used water as a quench with this blade but have had good luck also with different oils.

    Pastor's Knife

Finally got around to making my pastor a knife plus a sheath. The blade was forged out of a piece of 3/4" 60 grade rebar. Since he was in my shop when I forged the blade I thought I'd use the forging for his knife. Use a piece of curly maple that was saved out of the firewood rack and used some...

    Toenail Master

Guess its been at least 5 years ago I bought the smallest pair of diagonal cutters at HF. The main purpose for getting them was with the hopes that I could make the cutting head smaller and also make the cutting edges sharper to tackle the armor plated toenails that come during the aging...

Prayers for my wife as she battles cancer

Cliff, Sorry to read about all the turmoil you and your wife have had to go through. At least now you know what the problem is. I'll be praying that the treatments that you mentioned will all go smoothly and that the sickness that usually follows the therapy will be minimal. I'll be praying for...
