What's going on in your shop?

Thanks men! I've got some Harbor Freight tools and a lot of them are good for what they are and for the money. I started out on a HB 1x30 belt grinder and it still sits on my workbench beside my 2x72 I built. I still use it a lot for shaping handles. But I just hadn't heard anything about their...

What's going on in your shop?

Everything I've heard is to get some kind of portable band saw. I've been looking at a Milwaukee or DeWalt portable - but just haven't gave in and spent the money yet. Justin, what kind are you using?

What's going on in your shop?

I can imagine! I've got a cheap Ryobi bandsaw but it barely cuts wood and micarta and even with a new blade - it won't track straight no matter what I do! So I've got to get a better one. Cutting out blades with an angle grinder sucks! - especially this last batch of 13 knives!

I have a problem a wood addiction problem

Amen! I keep looking for a like button and it continues to not be there!

What's going on in your shop?

Nice! I've got to get a better band saw. I've just been using an angle grinder to cut mine out and it's a pain!

Looks good! Very well done especially for your first SHK!

Knife shaped steel. My first knife!

DeMo has given you sound advice all around. Heed his words and you'll do well. I also have to fight the urge to move on to other blades before I have the one I'm working on finished. In fact I don't do very good fighting the urge a lot of times. I've got at least a half dozen knives laying...

Scored a couple nice pieces of wood...

Nice score and good for you on finding a good cheap source for nice handle material! [emoji1417][emoji4]

    Heat treat questions

I don't use O1 steel personally, but I do use 1095 and 1084 and I believe the heat treat is similar. Preheat oil to 130°-140° and if you're quenching the whole blade (as opposed to doing just an edge quench - which is what I do) then stick the blade in your preheated oil tip first and then move...

Haha. Yeah, I guess something like that!

    Cleaver Project

Lol thanks man. I hardly consider myself a pro! I still feel like I'm learning myself and I've had a lot of makers help me tremendously so I'm just happy to be able to pass some knowledge on and help others as much as I can! I've made some very good friends in the knife making community who I...

    Cleaver Project

You put the work in on the knife - just to have someone do your makers mark isn't a cop out in my opinion! I think I'd willingly pay someone to do mine instead of having to etch it myself! Lol

    Cleaver Project

Yeah that sounds like a pretty good deal. I etch mine on my blades, but etching it doesn't look as good as yours does and it's an aggravating process to do it. I need to find someone nearby me that can do the laser marking.

What's going on in your shop?

Have you tried using some beeswax on your spacers to keep the dye off of them? I think that might work better than something like painters tape - but that might work too! I love the shape of the guard and the copper spacer you put in there.

What's going on in your shop?

Thanks. Yeah I knew about the vulcanized fiber spacers (I guess that's what kind of colored spacers you used?), but I've just never tried dyeing the leather in my stacks before. I normally just leave mine whatever color they turn out from the BLO I put on the leather. I may have to give it try...

Looks good. And satin... Always a good choice! Lol How are you putting your makers mark on the blade? Are you etching it on?

Man that looks great! What did you use to color the leather stack? It's beautiful.

What's going on in your shop?

Lol I completely know what you mean! [emoji4] Like one of those things that you never even knew you were missing out on - or that they even existed, but once you do, you just wonder why you never thought about it before!
