Different kinds of blade hardening and perceived (desired) benefits Fully through hardened- "100%" tempered martensite. Highest strength, good toughness. No aesthetic qualities. Differential tempering- fully through hardened, tempered martensite, plus deeper draw tempering toward the spine...

    Need a new forge

Personally, I think the Mathewson Metals that Boss carries look like a great value for forging and heat treating in a forge. If you want to do a lot of welding, the NC Tool forged work great. The NC won't be as even heating as a round body, but you can fit a muffle in it. I have an NC Whisper...

    Interesting "Artifact" from Rolling

I etched and stonewashed this blade today. When I got it out of the tumbler, I noticed this interesting(?) stripes all the way through the steel. I cut this out at about 15Deg to the length of sheet, so I'm assuming this is some type of something leftover from rolling. This is "European" 80CrV2...

    Between the pins

Yeah, your buffing compound is cutting cutting pin material and depositing it. I don't do a lot of buffing, but some folks just buff with wax. I'd expect that would mitigate cutting a lot of pin material.

    cutoff saw?

Yeah...the chop saw isn't a replacement for or comparable to even a not that great bandsaw. Especially for solid stock over an inch where heat becomes an issue. But, 1) if you have a welder 2) a metal pile and 3) an inclination to build stuff, an abrasive chop saw is a tool that very little buy...

    cutoff saw?

Mine has paid for itself 100 times over. I open the garage door and let the shower go outdoors when I'm doing bigger projects. I've chopped things bigger than I should've. FWIW, I almost despise the carbide metal saws. They put sharp, pokey shavings on everything.

    2021 KITH???

Man, I didn't see that Mr. Walker got stiffed. This should be something we can remedy with some simple changes to the swap. i.e., post a knife to officially enter.
